Hi,
I am planning a trip to Boston soon and would like, weather permitting, to walk from the MFA up the Fenway and cross the river to Mount Auburn.
Is this possible? Or do I have to go a long way east or west to cross the river?
Many thanks,
Christopher
Walk across the Charles RiverHi Curious,
It%26#39;s a bit of a walk, but you%26#39;d want to walk down Ruggles St, to The Fenway. Walk on The Fenway, past Simmons College and the Gardner Museum. When you get to Brookline Avenue, walk straight across and you are on Park Drive. Walk on Park Drive, past the Landmark Center mall, past the Fenway Green Line stop, go across Beacon St., keep walking until you hit the Mass Turnpike. Make a left, follow the road until you cross over the Mass Pike onto Commonwealth Ave.
At that point, you will be at the BU bridge, and you can walk over the BU bridge, over the Charles River to the Memorial Drive side. From there, you can walk up Memorial Drive to Harvard Sq.
Walk across the Charles RiverBeantownMan,
Thanks for the reply. I looked at your route using Google Earth -- Perhaps I will re-arrange my day and take the T instead.
Any other nice walks that might be off-the-beaten-track?
Thanks.
CG
There are lots of nice walks with good shoes and weather permitting. You%26#39;ll see green space on your map near the MFA, it%26#39;s called the Emerald Necklace, a series of small parks/gardens in the Fenway area. There are other parks in the Jamaica Plain area (follow Huntington Ave out of Boston). For more of a city walk, Commonwealth Ave has a grassy median with trees, benches, and statues from Mass Ave all the way to the Public Gardens. Both banks of the Charles River have long riverwalks, reachable by pedestrian bridges on the Boston side to the Esplanade, and along Mt. Auburn St. and Memorial Drive in Cambridge. The Harvard Square area has some green, and the Freedom Trail in downtown/Charlestown is interesting, too. Have a great trip!
