Hello,
my girlfriend and I will be in Boston for three days in mid October. We are looking for a budget hotel/motel (under 90$ for a twin or double room). What areas are safe places to stay? We don%26#39;t know Boston yet.
We do have a car or are willing to take the T, so the hotel doesn%26#39;t have to be right in the center. Safe and clean is most important for us.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Boston - safe areas to stay?
Under $90/night is tough. You can try bidding through Priceline, and see what happens. I%26#39;ve heard that people have gotten hotels in that range through Priceline.
Other than that, you could try the Ramada Inn on Morrisey Blvd in Dorchester, which might be in that price range.
There is a Motel 6 in Braintree, MA, which is a nice suburb about 10 miles south of Boston. It%26#39;s right next to the Red Line Station, so it%26#39;s convenient to get back and forth to Boston. The rooms are $80/night, I believe. You can check out the website and see http://www.motel6.com. I%26#39;ve stayed there once, and while it%26#39;s not luxurious by any means, it was clean enough and safe enough.
Boston - safe areas to stay?Here%26#39;s one for you: The Inn at Crystal Cove, in Winthrop, MA.
This used to be the site of the Governor Winthrop House, named for John Winthrop, a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the first Governor.
Just north of Logan airport, it%26#39;s a 10 minute drive and you%26#39;re at the beach!
The rooms facing the street have a sunset view of the Boston skyline across Winthrop Harbor. The neighborhood is safe and friendly, with a convenience store and laundramat just steps away.

Also in Braintree is a Holiday Inn Express, which is a very nice place to stay. We stayed there in August 2003 and were very satisfied with our stay. The hotel staff are exceptionally friendly and they provide a shuttle van that goes from the hotel to anywhere within a certain radius, which we found to be very convenient. We would call them a few minutes before we ready to be picked up at the nearby ';T'; station and within minutes, the van arrived. The hotel doesn%26#39;t have many amenities, such as a pool or hot tub, but the friendly staff and shuttle service makes up for that. The rooms are spacious and have been recently renovated. The hotel provides a free complimentary continental breakfast each morning, which we really enjoyed. The cinnamon rolls were delicious and there was a staff member nearby who would promptly refill/replace something the second it became empty. Our only complaint was that the air conditioning in the breakfast area was set to a very low temperature, making it unbearably cold. Other than that, we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to others staying in the area.
yeah, under 90 might be tough in town, but the good news is that the city -- Boston City is quite small geographically -- is very very accessible from the suburbs (which are also nice, with things to do), what we call ';inside 128'; (Routh 128/95). check map for towns. the good news is that, in Boston, unlike most of the other US cities I%26#39;ve been to, you almost never -- if you drive direct or take the ';T'; --go through a ';bad'; part of town on your way between two ';good'; parts, and even the ';T'; lines that go thru relatively lower-income areas are remarkably safe -- ';locals'; take %26#39;em all the time. likewise, I%26#39;d wager that most hotels with websites are in OK places. most of the flop-houses are well off the beaten path. your best bet for a low-cost places with an easy drie to town is to search along either Rtes. 128/95 or Rte. 93. There are also a ton of very low-budget places along Rte. 1 North of Boston is towns called ';Revere'; and ';Saugus'; -- safe area but a real mixed bag of quality -- a lot of flea-bags for the late-night disco crowd to flop.
The Holiday Inn Express in Braintree that I have recommended is only about $80 a night, which is right in your budget. It is a very good deal-nice, clean rooms at the same price you would pay at a cheap budget-style motel.
Use the ';T';. Do not rent/hire a car. As you are trying to budget your money, you will be shocked at the daily fees to park your car in a garage/car park or through the hotel valet service in Boston. Street parking is very difficult to find.
