My family and I are taking our first trip to Cape Cod the last full week of October. My wife and I are so looking forward to it.(The kids are too young to care as long as it%26#39;s not home). So what can we expect or look forward to.
We are staying in North Truro at the Sandbars. I know we will go Whale Watching. I am interested in Clamming or Scalloping. Is it hard for a beginner? Can you rent metal detectors anywhere for beach searching?
Where else do you recommend going? We want to try the restaurants. Maybe take a haunted ghost tour. Any recommendations for these?
Can%26#39;t wait to see the Cape- I guess the water will be absolutely too cold?!
HELP??
A Late October Vacation
The Cape is wonderful; in October, and uncrowded. The weather will be cool, even downright cold at night and the water will be very cold for swimming, but it%26#39;s great time for walks on the beach and exploring.
To go clamming you need low tide, and some flat muddy areas. When we were kids we would just drill down into the mud until we felt something hard and then dig in fast with our hands to grab a clam before it started burrowing deepr. Of course this method led to quite a few cuts and gashes from the shells. Better to get a clamming rake, and check out the local regulations for permits etc.
I%26#39;d recommend a trip to the Cape Cod National Seashore, and Coast Guard Beach in Eastham. There are some great walks through this area, and the beach is stunning. This is the ocean side of the Cape, and the surf can kick up pretty good.
Provincetown is a lot of fun, and has some great restaurants (check some other recent posts, e.g. Honeymoon in Provinctown). Also, beyond the town, head out to Race Point, the views from the dunes are wonderful.
A Late October Vacation
The post with the great restaurant recs for P-town is ';a straight anniversary in Provincetown. I%26#39;ll move it close to the top of the list for you.
Actually there%26#39;s someone who I ran across who will take you out clamming. If you are really interested in that then say so and I will look back through my stuff and see if I can dig that out for you. It sounded like a good way to do it the first time at least and enjoy some success.
You might want to look into the Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary which is the first road (heading north by the compass or east if you believe the signs) after the Drive-In theater in Wellfleet, just over the Eastham line. They have naturalists who give educational tours that your kids might like. The Sanctuary is beautiful and provides varying walks, some down to the bay where there are lots of ';hermit crabs'; ....could keep the kids entertained for a while! Here is their web site massaudubon.org/Nature_Connection/…index.php
The outer cape is beautiful in October. Enjoy your visit!
