I actually went to Emerson College for Writing Literature and Publishing, so I can probably recommend some ';haunts'; that he might like. If he%26#39;s interested in Writing he may or may not be interested in touring the ';writers'; boston--i.e. he may like to go to the Brattle Book Shop which is the successor to America%26#39;s oldest antiquarian bookshop. There are plenty of used books, and it%26#39;s just a great place. http://www.brattlebookshop.com. Also there are lots of
writerly attractions like the Boston Public Library which is absolutely gorgeous and has a really good restaurant inside it as well. The old part of the library is full of old marble, giant rooms, and is really a sight to see. A lot of tourists miss it because they don%26#39;t think to look inside the library itself. It%26#39;s located in copley plaza so you may enjoy taking a look in.
If I were you, I would get a hotel in Boston and then take the commuter rail to Salem if the hotels in the area are very expensive. That way you only have to purchase the cost of a ticket. Or if you have a car, it%26#39;s an easy day trip. No more than 45 minutes there. I used mapquest directions and it got me there just fine.
Also, if you are a ';walking visitor'; meaning you just like to walk around and take in the city, I recommend walking through Beacon Hill%26#39;s streets. On Beacon and Mount Vernon Streets you can see the former homes of Louisa May Alcott (10 Louisburg Sq.), Henry Kissinger (1 Chestnut St.), Julia Ward Howe (13 Chestnut St.), Edwin Booth (29A Chestnut St.), and Robert Frost (88 Mount Vernon St.). However, seeing these aren%26#39;t necessary--but I was thinking your boyfriend might find them amusing.
Also, walking the Freedom Trail can be nice mostly because it gives you a nice overview of Boston. It%26#39;s getting much chillier so make sure you bring a light coat and clothes to layer a little, because it was quite a surprise to me this morning.
Hotels in Boston I recommend? Well if you want to save money you could stay at the Holiday Inn in Brookline near Coolidge Corner. It%26#39;s right across from the St. Paul T stop on the C-line and it takes about 10-15 minutes (depending on what time of day) to get to the ';toursity'; part of the city. Plus, you%26#39;ll be right near coolidge corner which has great resturants--the coolidge corner theater--and if you kept walking down harvard street (nice little walk through Brookline) you%26#39;d be in Allston--the hipster neighborhood full of cheap food and younger bars.
However, if you want to be closer to the city--it does get more expensive I%26#39;m afraid. However some reasonably priced hotels closer to central Boston ...Howard Johnson Hotel located in Kenmore which is perfect for those who are not looking for service or anything fancy at all but i know you can get a good deal. One problem right now is that it%26#39;s playoff season for the red sox so it%26#39;s a little expensive everywhere. However, I%26#39;m sure if you looked on priceline or orbitz you could get a pretty good deal on a hotel outside the city. Also, somewhere in Cambridge might be a great stay if you did a little research (Trip advisor forums) because it%26#39;s right across the river and is an easy trip to the central parts of the city via the red line or taxi or bus across the bridge.
Also, if you can%26#39;t make it to Salem (if you have a car it will be much easier to get there) then you should take a ghost tour of Cambridge or Boston- I%26#39;ve heard those can be fun. Also, your boyfriend and you might like going to the Museum of Fine Arts--may give him inspiration for that next poem. Just be sure if you do a lot of sightseeing you try to get a value pass to save some money all of that adds up
If you have any more questions, I%26#39;ll be happy to answer! I%26#39;m glad to help

Hi Nurse:
Just thought I%26#39;d give you a little help and insight on how to use these forums. After you have read the replies that others have left to your posts, and you are ready to reply to them, scroll up to the top of the screen. Above their reply is your original post and you will see directly under your name ';Nursemd09'; a button that says ';Reply To This Post';. Click on that and then you are all set to type in your response.
Also, just a little pointer...to get more responses to your original posts, make your questions a little more specific. Like instead of posting the question ';what to do in Boston'; maybe post with a title like ';looking for a good pub in Boston';.
Good luck!!
Hi Shaxxon,
How can I find out about the ghost walks?
We did one in Edinburgh and it was great so would love to do one in historic Boston!
Thanks Sarah
I know there is a Ghosts and Gravestones tour which people have liked, but it%26#39;s by tour bus. It takes you through the route of the Boston Strangler, to some burial grounds, tells haunted ghost stories.

There is a walking tour called the Boston Spirits Walking Tour which I don%26#39;t know much about but am interested in myself. The information can be found at this address:

Also, if you%26#39;re interested in Ghost and Witch tales you might want to take a Trip to Salem. (45 minutes away from Boston) Great ghost tours there and a perfect trip for the October months. I highly recommend it if you have time while in Boston. You can rent a car or you can take the Commuter rail in. Either way, that%26#39;s fun too.
hi
