Nice restaurants near Harvard Square?

My husband and I are planning an evening out this Saturday and would like to hear recommendations for a nice romantic restaurant near Harvard Square (either in Boston or Cambridge). (We will be watching a skating show there that starts at 7 pm.) Any suggestions (no seafood)? We haven%26#39;t been in the Boston area since our college days so we want to go someplace special. Thanks for your help!

there are of course a million ideas, and many threads on this site talking about resturants. but for an upscale quasi-romantic in Harvard Square proper, nothing beats the Harvest. a little pricey, but always a great chef and wine to match.

I have to agree. Harvest is by far my favorite place to eat in Harvard Square.

Sometimes I think I%26#39;m losing my mind....

Don%26#39;t forget Upstairs on The Square! It%26#39;s located in Winthrop Square, where Mount Auburn and JFK Streets meet. The two gals who own/run Upstairs on The Square used to be the powerhouse behind UpStairs at The Pudding, located above the Hasty Pudding Theatre.

Their new endeavor is really amazing! There are two floors, each decorated in a different manner and with a different vibe. I like the Zebra room - it makes me think of Barbie on acid! The food is simple but well done and the wine list is quite good.

Hi 2Cape,

You seem to have ended up with two postings about this topic, I don%26#39;t know which one you are reading, but there are some posts with good ideas in the other thread.

When I mentioned Sandrine%26#39;s, (in the other thread) I also completely forgot my other favorite in Harvard Square...the Craigie Street Bistrot. It%26#39;s also got wonderful French food and great atmosphere:

Fair warning, there%26#39;ve been not-nice things said about the Craigie St ';Bistrot'; recently. So caveat emptor on that one.

In addition to the solid recommendations of Sandrine%26#39;s and Harvest, I%26#39;d like to add Rialto (at the Charles Hotel) and Chez Henri. The latter is on Shepard St just west of Mass. Ave and was ';Chez Jean'; for many years. It%26#39;s still a hole-in-the-wall, candlelit place, now with some Spanish and Cuban ';flavor'; added to the French mainstays on the menu.

On the Boston side of the river, the ';rooms with a view'; are still there - State Room, formerly Bay Tower, and Top of the Hub. Then there%26#39;s L%26#39;Espalier and Aujourd%26#39;hui for two more French ideas - since the French have always done romantic dining well.

I still lament Cafe Budapest%26#39;s end - you have to rule that one out if you%26#39;d thought of it.

Concerning the recommendation for the ';State Room';, formerly the ';Bay Tower Room';, it is now only available for groups and event functions by reservation planning and booking. It is not available to the general public.
