Thanks to everyone who posted on my other question. I would appreciate if someone could list some more hotels near subway not right in Boston. It sounds like I can do subway from Boston to Salem My kids next year will be 18, 9 and 3. Would prefer not to drive much. Thanks for all the help from this Southerner!
Boston/Salem next Oct.Hello thethreeE%26#39;smom,
You%26#39;ll get a lot of great ideas on where to stay with this question! The people online here have really good spots for you outside of Boston!
Two that I think are really good for families are as follows:
AmeriSuites in Medford, MA
116 Riverside Ave NE
Medford, MA
The reason it%26#39;s good is because it has a free and convenient shuttle right to the train and it%26#39;s only 15 minutes from Logan, this one would be convenient but....
This other one is really good if you can get to Beverly, MA and the reason why it%26#39;s really good is because it%26#39;s within walking distance to all kinds of restaurants, shops, salons and supermarkets all right nearby. The train is only a short walk away as well, which makes it convenient to get in to either Boston or go the other way to Salem and beyond. Go to www.mbta.com and you%26#39;ll see the commuter rail schedules.
It%26#39;s about a 30 minute drive from Logan though, that%26#39;s the only thing you%26#39;d have to consider, you%26#39;d just need to have transportation from Logan to this place and back to Logan when you%26#39;re leaving and that%26#39;s it. The site online gives you all the directions and information you need for it.
The Lakeview Motor Lodge
5 Lakeview Ave.
Beverly, MA
1 800 922-7535
You%26#39;ll get other suggestions as well, but this should get you started with your plans.
Have fun!
Boston/Salem next Oct.
Hi,
I%26#39;m not sure if you just want hotels convenient to the T, or hotels North of Boston, between Salem and Boston? Anyhow, I have a couple of ideas for you:
In Somerville, there is the Tage Inn, and the Holiday Inn Express. Both are convenient to the T, either by a short drive to the parking lot, or by motel shuttle service. You might even be able to walk to Lechmere Green Line station from the Holiday Inn; it%26#39;s pretty close by. The Tage Inn does have a shuttle to the Orange Line, I believe.
In Woburn, there is a cluster of hotels around the Anderson transportation center station on the Lowell commuter rail line. It%26#39;s really easy to get into Boston on the commuter rail from there. There are three that are next to the station: Fairfield Inn, Hampton Inn, and a Courtyard by Marriott. Just look at each hotel company%26#39;s website under Woburn, MA. If you really don%26#39;t want to drive, you can take the train into North Station, and switch to a Rockport train to Salem, although that%26#39;s a long way to go. It%26#39;s actually a fairly easy ride from Woburn to Salem by car.
One other thing. If you are interested in history and you stay in Woburn, you should visit Lowell%26#39;s National Historic Park. It%26#39;s a fascinating historic preservation of Lowell%26#39;s tradition as a textile mill city. They have mill tours and a canal ride with barges and trolleys which is really interesting, if you are a history buff. Here%26#39;s the website:

I wasn%26#39;t aware that the AmeriSuites in Medford Square had free shuttle service. Anyway, the Wellington Station bus line stops right out the front door. About a 10 minute ride to Wellington Station, the MBTA Orange line stop in Medford. From there, you can go one stop outbound to Malden Center station and switch to the commuter rail line. OH WAIT!! No, that is the Haverhill line. To get to Salem, you%26#39;d have to take the Orange line in town to North Station and catch the Newburyport or Rockport trains. Both of them stop in Salem before branching out. Kind of a great big hassle to get to Salem this way, but if you are adamant about not driving, then so be it. Driving, you could be IN Salem by the time it takes you to get into North Station and on the commuter train.
Also, the Tage Inn in Scumerville (sorry) is now a La Quinta. Directly behind the courthouse and across from a 99 Restaurant. Not in what I%26#39;d consider a safe area for walking, though. About a 1/2 mile from the Sullivan Square Orange line subway station. Probably has free shuttle service, so you wouldn%26#39;t have to walk. The Holiday Inn in Somerville is about a 1/4 mile, and what I%26#39;d call marginally safer.
And as stated earlier, the Woburn Mall area has a ton of the small hotels/inns. Hampton/Fairfield/RedRoof/Courtyard/Residence are all a 2-5 minute walk from the Woburn Mall area right off Rt 128, and the Anderson commuter rail station is about a 2 minute ride from here, but probably a 15-20 minute walk. Probably all have shuttles to the station, though. The Medford and Woburn locations I%26#39;d consider much safer than the Somerville locations. AmeriSuites is right in Medford Square with plenty of traffic and shops/eateries. The Woburn Mall area also has a ton of vehicle traffic well into the evening, with the mall/Lowes/MarketBasket and a number of chain restaurants all right amongst these hotels.
Here%26#39;s info regarding shuttle from the AmeriSuite site...
Rental cars and taxis are commonly used to travel from the airport to the hotel. Also, a local shuttle stops at the hotel and will take guests to the Orange Line subway (known locally as the “T”) stop. The subway travels to downtown Boston and the airport.
The hotel provides limited free transportation in the local area and garage parking. During summer months, the Old Town Trolley transports guests into Boston. A local shuttle stops at the hotel and will take guests to the Orange Line subway, which stops at Tufts University and downtown Boston. Driving in downtown Boston is challenging for locals, let alone travelers unfamiliar with the random street system and congestion. Drivers are advised to take along a good street map, or better yet, rely on the city’s well-developed transit system of buses, trolleys, and subways.
