i am looking for big gourmet grocery stores all over the united states. i was wondering if anyone could tell me about the stores near them. in upstate ny we have a store called Wegmans, it has everything. ethnic, gourmet cheeses, a patisserie, prepared foods (soups, pizza, wings, salads, filet mignon, pork, roasted chicken, and i could go on forever), organic produce, natures marketplace (healthy, vegetarian, soy, dairy, cereal, tea, canned goods . . . ), a huge seafood and meat counter, a huge deli carrying many unique products, a seperate kosher deli, a bakery with about 50 different kinds of bread and bread products. ok thats enough, i don%26#39;t want to ramble on forever. anyway i thought this would be a good place to ask, bcuz people from all over come here. i would appreciate your help. name and locations of great grocery stores. thanks
U.S. Grocery storesHello oz1383,
In the greater New England states the popular supermarket chains are super sizing. So Shaw%26#39;s is has Super Shaw%26#39;s, The Stop %26amp; Shop has the Super Stop %26amp; Shop as two really popular chains that you see springing up all over the region. Hannaford%26#39;s in NH has a great gourmet section with a huge seafood, deli and bakery section. They%26#39;re all very good I think.

Trader Joe%26#39;s is wonderful! You can see online for yourself, the closest one to the North Shore or the Seacoast of New Hampshire is down in Peabody, MA, that they just finally recently opened. One of these days we%26#39;ll get one up this way and we won%26#39;t have to travel all the way down to that area!
In Portsmouth, NH the latest gourmet shop is Philbrick%26#39;s Fresh Market and they%26#39;re located at 775 Lafayette Rd., Portsmouth, NH 603 422-6758.
Take your pick!

Sorry the phone rang...here%26#39;s the website for Philbrick%26#39;s Fresh Market....there%26#39;s only one in Portsmouth, they%26#39;re not all over the country like Trader Joe%26#39;s though. Expensive as anything; we only go in here for ONE or TWO things that%26#39;s IT. I do MUCH better at Trader Joe%26#39;s when I%26#39;m near one!
Here%26#39;s info and good article about Philbrick%26#39;s Fresh Market....

Bread and Circus - which I think is now known as Whole Foods -is more of an upscale grocery store. The space is usually not that large, although Whole Foods has moved into the old Stop and Shop space on Cambridge Street on Beacon Hill. They specialize in mainly organic and natural products for the house and human. I recall the Cambridge location always had amazing selections of meats, vegetables and fish, but it was not cheap!
Trader Joe%26#39;s is similar to that, although they made their name in the frozen area. Lately they%26#39;ve branched out to include fresh meats and prepared sandwiches, but their pre-made frozen entrees/sides are what makes them. They contract with large food manufacturers to create items under their own private label which in turn keeps costs down. They usually work in small spaces too, and they don%26#39;t carry your basic staples.
BEANSANDCOD: A belated congratulations on your local expert appointment!!
Thanks, edgers! I must admit that I%26#39;m in some pretty lofty company around here, but we%26#39;re keeping up the best we can!
