Any recommendations for a (relatively) inexpensive hotel near the hospital? My dad is having minor surgery at Boston General at the end of the month and we thought we would fly up to visit him for a few days.

Perhaps you mean Massachusetts General Hospital? The closest hotel would be the Holiday Inn Government Center, on Blossom St., which is pretty much next door. I don%26#39;t know what you consider inexpensive, but it would certainly be the most convenient for you. I believe it%26#39;s somewhat less expensive than staying in the Back Bay or at a Hilton/Sheraton type of hotel.
Also, since MGH is on the Red Line (Charles/MGH stop), you could find a hotel along the Red Line, and that would be OK too. The Sheraton Commander in Harvard Sq. sometimes has good deals on rooms, and South of town, the Quincy Marriott and the Best Western Adams Inn, both in Quincy near the Red Line, might be a bit cheaper for you.
The Tremont House hotel, in the Theater District, would also be an idea. It%26#39;s reasonably-priced, and it wouldn%26#39;t be too difficult for you to get to the hospital from there (you could even walk...it%26#39;s about 20 minutes%26#39; walk).
One other option is to try Priceline, which a lot of people seem to have good luck with, getting discounts on Boston hotel rooms.

Thanks...I did mean Mass General. I checked the Holiday Inn and the price ran too high for my budget ($275 a night). Somewhere less expensive along the Red Line sounds great.

Please call the John Jeffries House, which is across Charles Circle from MGH. Although they are technically a B%26amp;B now, the JJ House began as a location for family members to stay while dealing with medical procedures at the hospital.

I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Gov%26#39;t Centre and got my room for just under $100- try www.BestatTravel.com.
Thanks everyone: I stayed at the John Jeffries House and it was wonderful. The T station was right at the front door and the hospital across the street. Next time I go to Boston for pleasure, I know where to book a room.
