My mom and dad are finally retired and are possibly looking to relocate to Massachusetts. They really like Cape Cod, which would be good in respect that there will always be something going on, at least in the summer anyway, and also be good from a resale point of view for them, should they decide to ever move again. My dad is a heart transplant patient so they can%26#39;t be to, to far from a big hospital, they love the beach, love the water and they enjoy just being in one anothers company. They also do not want a 55+ community or a condo or townhouse. Does anyone have any advise as to how and where my parents should relocate to? Any and all information is greatly appreciated. Thank you for contributing, Lori

While the cape is beautiful and a very popluar place to retire to, it is NOT close to a major teaching hospital. Depending where on the cape they lived, they would be 1-2 hours (more with traffic) from Boston. If your dad needs to be near a major medical center, they might consider other areas in coastal Massachusetts that are closer to Boston.
I have elderly relatives who retired to Eastham on the cape, but had to move because he kept getting hospitalized in Boston, and it was too far for her to drive to visit him. They re-settled in Rhode Island, near Providence.

Hello NorthCarolinaBound:
You know NCBOUND I read your WHOLE thread from beginning to end and I%26#39;ve been every so many days keeping up with it ON THAT NC FORUM of yours!!!! It%26#39;s like the SOAPS in that ';Moving to North Carolina'; forum I%26#39;ll have you know and YOU with all your nicknames for everyone, it%26#39;s a RIOT! YOU are SOOO priceless with all those people kabitzing back and forth! I%26#39;ve been rooting for the ones on there that end up finding houses that are looking and end up with getting what they want, I%26#39;m rooting for the ones that are thinking of moving there and don%26#39;t know whether it%26#39;s a GOOD idea, and I%26#39;m online yelling GO FOR IT, GO FOR IT, MOVE YA HEAR ME, DON%26#39;T LOOK BACK!!! Toooo funny!!!!! The reason why I%26#39;m checking out that state is because a really good friend of mine and her husband are moving the first week in December to South Carolina (Lake Wylie) and I%26#39;ve been helping her with the different tips that you guys have on your forum like you would NOT believe! It%26#39;s been JUST fantasic for her, especially when the taxes were discussed; you have NOOOO idea how helpful all that has been!!!! So from the bottom of my heart NCBOUND thank you soooo much to you and all your buddies on that NC forum!!!!! It%26#39;s been fantastic for my friend and her husband! I%26#39;m driving them down there with a rented van and their two cats, so it%26#39;ll be my adventure in a few months believe me, I%26#39;ll tell you all about it when I get back!!!
As far as your parents are concerned NCBOUND? I agree with the previous post wholeheartedly you know. It%26#39;s really NOT a good idea to be all the way down Cape Cod with a heart condition like that and YES he really really should be near a major teaching hospital. MGH is one as well as Beth Israel I believe and the Brigham %26amp; Women%26#39;s-St. Elizabeth is another one if he really wants to be in the Boston area. Do you think if your parents really really have their heart set on moving to Cape Cod may be you could convince them to look in through a town on the South Shore that%26#39;s CLOSE to the highway for Cape Cod yet still within minutes from these hospitals? Like see if you can get him to look in through one of the towns in Plymouth County like Hingham or may be Weymouth or Hanover one of those towns on the South Shore of Boston? It might be a better idea?? I don%26#39;t know about living down Cape Cod with a major health issue like that, I%26#39;d be a complete basket case if it were one of my parents. What do you think? If you do a mapquest you%26#39;ll see that these towns aren%26#39;t a bad drive from the City of Boston. They%26#39;re NOT a good drive with the South Shore traffic the way it is, but it%26#39;s NOT a bad drive once you get used to the short cuts and knowing like every where else when the best time to drive on that southeast expressway is! I hope things turn out great for you with your parents! Hey NCBOUND they don%26#39;t want to move to NC or SC with you and your family huh down the road?!!!!

I think you should look into the the towns of the North shore/Cape Ann area. It%26#39;s got loads of seaside towns that have great seafood, a lot of tourism and history, and are within 25-50 miles of Boston%26#39;s major hospitals. Some towns worth considering:
Manchester, Beverly, Gloucester, Ipswich, Hamilton, Salem, Rockport, Newburyport, Marblehead, Swampscott
Mass General, Brigham %26amp; Women%26#39;s, Tufts NE Medical Center and many more are in Boston. There are also fairly large community hospitals in Beverly, Salem, Lynn, %26amp; Newburyport. The Lahey Clinic is in Burlington (not a seaside town, though)
A bit further (south) from Boston, the towns os Plymouth, Hingham and Scituate are considerations. Jordan Hospital is located in Plymouth.
thanks for the replies you guys!!! i have cut and poasted them into an e-mail to my mom and dad so let%26#39;s see what they say. i will update you tomorrow as i have to leave work now to pick up my little guy, mario (age 6), from school.
moo cow - naaaaahhhh! my parents don%26#39;t want to go with me, they can%26#39;t. before my dad had the heart transplant, he had a triple by-pass 1 %26amp; 1/2 years prior to that. becasue of this, his legs are now bothering him and give him trouble walking %26amp; stuff. he now uses a cane sometimes who we affectionately call angelo. (his new heart is named julio.) becasue of the leg thingy, the humidity effects them very badly so they would rather stay up, then go down, ya know. ...and my mom, this year just started with this breathing thing, so she has trouble with the heat/humidity as well. geeeze! ya know, they hit 70 and its like their heading down hill at light speed for cryin%26#39; out loud! just last year they were more active than me! well, maybe i should say that cause%26#39; i can be a slug sometimes! only kidding! LOL! gotta laugh! oh... and i gotta run, we%26#39;ll chat mroe tomorrow! maybe i will see you again on my nc forum too!!! chow for now!!! remember, do as as mr. rourke says: smiles everyone, smiles!!
does anyone else have anything they would like to add??
thanks again to all who have contributed thus far! i have given all the info. re: this forum to my mom %26amp; dad via e-mail. they print it out and read your answers over tea and/or coffee. they are really happy about what they have read so far so keep it comming!!
My sister and brother in law both retired to the Cape and love it. They live in Eastham near the National Seashore and Nauset Beach--also near enough to the Orleans rotary where there%26#39;s shopping and ';life';. Lots to do all year round for the senior set. Cape Cod Hospital is in Hyannis--and Falmouth Hospital is towards Upper Cape. Your parents may also want to consider Plymouth....just on the other side of the bridge....so that they%26#39;ll be that much closer to Boston and the major hospitals, yet still enjoy the ';Cape'; feeling.
I definitely recommend the North Shore. One of the great things about it is that you can live near or on the coast and get a truly New England feel, but still be close enough to city. (Which can be fabulous in the winter time as winters can be brutal and it%26#39;s nice to be near the city so you can take in the Museum of Fine Art, the Theater, and other great indoor entertainment in the summertime. But sometimes I think it takes visiting the towns first hand to really get a sense, especially in the winter. I don%26#39;t think anyone will argue the Cape is amazing in the summertime, but it seems pretty different (at least to me) when winter rolls around.
thanks for the input. on october 15th my parents will be celebrating thier 50th wedding anniversary. shortly after thier party, they will be taking a trip up that way to check out some areas. hopefully they will like some and have a better idea of ';where'; they want to be. :-)
