Nearest aiport to New Bedford

Help!!!!!!!!! Can anyone tell me the quickest way to get to New Bedford from New York. I am travelling to NY from London then have just 24hours to do roundtrip from Ny to New Bedford MA to visit a long lost relative. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Nearest aiport to New Bedford

Logan out of Boston is about 60 miles away and TF Green being out of Warwick,RI is about 38 miles from New Bedford..So TF Green would be your best bet...

Airport code is PVD

Here%26#39;s the website.

http://www.pvdairport.com/

Nearest aiport to New Bedford

Yes, Providence (TF Green) is closest and easiet. Consider also AMTRAK to Providence. Either way, you can rent a car or take a limo (Town Car Travel is $35 each way).

If you can stay in New Bedford overnight, come see us at Captain Haskell%26#39;s Octagon House.

Macy%26#39;s sells Bridesmaids dresses and has alot of different makes. You can view them on:

www.macys.com

Filene%26#39;s doesn%26#39;t sell Bridesmaid dresses at all due to the fact that there partner David%26#39;s Bridal sells them. They%26#39;re incredible there. You can view them at

Dinner near the Boston Convention Center

We%26#39;re attending a function at 415 Summer Stree, The Boston Convention Center, on Saturday evening, Any suggestions for dinner in the area (aside from Pier 4 or Jimmy%26#39;s - done that). Would love to park only once if possible!

Dinner near the Boston Convention Center

Funny--I heard both those restaurants were either closed on on their way out anyhow.....

Sorry--I haven%26#39;t been in that area to dine in a while....

Dinner near the Boston Convention Center

Hi Northbound,

Do yourself a favor and get over to the Langham Hotel to ';Julien%26#39;s'; restaurant if you can! It%26#39;s the most beautiful dining room in all of Boston, I%26#39;m not kidding you. I just got in the door from meeting friends for dinner there tonight. It%26#39;s absolutely incredible french cuisine, I just loved it. Check out the menu online if you get the chance to see what I mean. It%26#39;s positively wonderful there! It%26#39;s a hop skip and a jump from the Boston Convention Center by taxi, you could just leave the car there and hop in a taxi if you want. It%26#39;s basically nothing to get to from the Center, or even walk if it%26#39;s nice weather like we%26#39;ve been having, that%26#39;s how close it is.

Or if you don%26#39;t want to get all ';dressed up to the nines'; you can always go to Southie to Cafe Porto Bello at 672 East Broadway. It%26#39;s ';Southie%26#39;s Own Antonio%26#39;s'; (like the best kept secret on Cambridge St.!) The food is unbelievable and it%26#39;s a cute little tiny place that you%26#39;d walk by if you drove up E. Broadway! You know how those little ';hole in the walls'; are always really good? Well this is one of them! Some times the line is out the door, you just have to time it right that%26#39;s all! Call and see how it looks for a table, I don%26#39;t think they take reservations, or else I never saw them taking them. It%26#39;s first ones in and the rest wait!

You won%26#39;t want to go to Jimmy%26#39;s or Anthony%26#39;s Pier 4, they%26#39;re not what they used to be any way and they haven%26#39;t been that great in years. Another possibility that%26#39;s extremely good is Venezia%26#39;s but it%26#39;s a further ride on the southeast expressway for you, it%26#39;s up to you, (it%26#39;s your call!) Here%26#39;s the Venezia%26#39;s menu and directions:

http://www.venezia-onthewater.com

There%26#39;s always seafood or steak you know right on L St. in Southie about a 1/2 mile from the Convention Center. Up on the right hand side on L Street from Summer St. is the ';Original Kelly%26#39;s Landing 2'; at 81 L Street, they have really really good seafood and steak with great prices! www.originalkellyslanding2.com

Good luck you%26#39;ll manage around that area, You%26#39;ll be surprised!

Northbound,

If you do end up going to Cafe Porto Bello? From the Convention Center you can walk it if you have time. I walked from South Station up Summer St to Southie for 15 years,it%26#39;s nothing because it%26#39;s only 2 miles. So from the Convention Center it would be less of a walk.

From the Center go straight all the way past it until you cross the bridge which you%26#39;ll sometimes see the Cruise ships there this time of year at Black Falcon Terminal. You%26#39;ll pass the Boston Edison/NSTAR building and you can%26#39;t miss it. The next corner will be Murphy%26#39;s Pub keep walking up to the set of lights that you%26#39;ll see. This is East Broadway and L St. Take a right and go past Osco Drug and a few blocks up on the right across from Jone%26#39;s will be Cafe Porto Bello%26#39;s. You might even pass it because it%26#39;s a little tiny brick place.

There is nothing near the Convention Center

Check out Downtown and Park at the Boston Common Garage under the Boston Common for short $$

There are several nice restaurants near there such as #9 Park,The Federalist,Parkers Restaurant at the Omni Parker House which invented the Boston Creme Pie. Ruth%26#39;s Chris Steak House is accross the street from the Parker House. You can take a taxi to the convention center from the HOtel for only $6.00. Plus spending time around that area you will really experience Boston.

On weekends, the max daily rate in the garage near South Station is $10 (I always called it the Chinatown Garage). It%26#39;s on the corner of Essex St and the Surface Road. From there, you could take the new Silver Line from South Station to the convention center and back. One of my favorite restaurants is located within walking distance of South Station... the Barking Crab... located on the Fort Point Channel on Sleeper St. It%26#39;s casual seafood served ';dockside';... especially nice if the weather is suitable for outside dining. There are plenty of other restaurants in the South Station area, and Chinatown is practically across the street.

  • Chart House Restaurant

I just discovered that there is a Chart House Restaurant on Long Wharf in Boston. We ate in two of them in Florida where the food was freshly prepared and delicious.

Is the one on Long Wharf good? And if so, do they require reservations and is it easy to find on foot?

    Thanks!

    Chart House Restaurant

Last I heard, The Chart House is a reliable chain, the location is superb. Very Easy to find on foot, it%26#39;s at the end of Long Wharf (near the Aquarium) on the left.

Another seafood restaurant you might want to check out in the same neighborhood is Legal Seafood%26#39;s. This is a local chain known for their feshness - but can be a little pricey. Enjoy your visit to this area of town!

    Chart House Restaurant

The Chart House couldn%26#39;t be in a nicer spot, right at the end of Long Wharf near the Marriott. You can walk there easily from anywhere downtown and a stone%26#39;s throw from the Aquarium T stop it%26#39;s a snap from everywhere else.

I know many others here recommend Legal%26#39;s, but I think they%26#39;ve jumped the shark. Take the Chart House.

is the menu still on oars?

Not the one in Boston. We were there a few weeks ago and it was paper!

Chart House has a nice location but its over-priced and over rated.

If you want value or high end check out these options

#9 Park which is on Park Street

Parkers Restaurant which is in the Omni Parker House HOtel and they are celebrating 150th Anniversary Year and they Invented Parker House Roll, Boston Creme Pie,Scrod and even Emeril Lagasse got his start there

Its right on the Freedom Trail and walkng distance to all the sites and plenty of other Restaurants are right around there.

Thank you for all the input. Will we be able to just walk in and get a table on Sat night or should I call ahead and make reservations?

We may try Legal Seafood too as that has been getting good reviews.

We will be coming back to Boston from Waltham and using the T. Thanks for the info on that stop near the Aquarium! Every little bit of info helps.

Here are some reviews of the Chart House:

    http://boston.citysearch.com/profile/4721293

To me, it%26#39;s overpriced and the food is okay but not great. It%26#39;s also part of a national chain. If you%26#39;re going to Boston I%26#39;d go somewhere that%26#39;s unique to that city, not a place that you can find anywhere.

    Thanks Stephani for your input.

I agree that Chart House is a chain but we have never been disappointed with their food and we don%26#39;t have one in NYS. It was familiar so I was leaning that way.

What are some of your favorite eating places? We would like to have one night of good food, wine and atmosphere as it is our anniversary. The other 3 nites can be casual with good local food.

Cat here%26#39;s a link that should take you to a thread that we had about restaurants in Boston a month or two ago. Should give you tons of ideas...

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60745-i48-k290041…

I really like the Chart House. Yes, it%26#39;s part of a chain, but doesn%26#39;t feel like one. The location is great, the old building really interesting, the food and service good. I go there a couple of times a year and have never made a reservation for a weeke night. I would take it over Legal Seafood%26#39;s (talk about over-rated chain restaurants) anyday.

    Back to the Peabody Marriott!

Hi! I am trying to use a Rewards certificate with Marriott. ($100)Unfortunately, they are pretty picky about where you can use it. It is good only at the full service Marriott (read $250-350/nite), or at the one up in Peabody(for about $119/nite). We are trying to do a Saturday day trip to Salem, and spend Sunday doing the Freedom Trail and then maybe hit the Arnold Arboretum on the way home. Friday eve we figured on dinner and relaxing, early Zzzz%26#39;s. How inconvienient is Peabody? We will have a car, but hoped not use it. Thanks, again!

    Back to the Peabody Marriott!

    Hi DLtreks,

If you don%26#39;t mind staying in Peabody then that%26#39;s what you should do. It%26#39;s I believe right in a business complex area called Centennial Drive which is actually in a really good location IF you have a car. You might want to think about using your car for transportation? If you do decide to stay here, it%26#39;s in an office park type location. The Peabody%26#39;s Marriott Hotel is roughly 16 miles from downtown Boston. It%26#39;s about a 20 minute drive in to downtown on a good day. In the early morning there%26#39;s tie ups but it moves most of the time at that hour, it%26#39;s not really that bad, I just want you to know this so you can make your decision. The congestion starts happening at a certain time and most people know when it%26#39;s going to be and when exactly to avoid it.

You just have to know when to head in to Boston that%26#39;s all.

If you%26#39;re going to be staying here over a weekend? You%26#39;re fine, it%26#39;s no problem at all. Get your mapquest out for Salem, it%26#39;s not far at all from this Marriott. You%26#39;ll manage fine, as

long as you don%26#39;t mind driving. There%26#39;s a lot of really good restaurants along this Lynnfield Rte 1 area as you head up to Peabody you%26#39;ll see a lot of the good ones, even if you spot them for landmarks on your drive it%26#39;ll help you to remember where you%26#39;re going up through here! There%26#39;s Jimmy%26#39;s Steer House at 114 Broadway in Saugus that%26#39;s near Lynnfield. There%26#39;s Polcari%26#39;s at 92 Broadway right on Rte 1 in Saugus. The Continental is a lot of peoples favorite on Rte 1 in Saugus. Donatello%26#39;s at 44 Broadway in Saugus along this Rte 1 stretching from the area where you%26#39;ll see Square One Mall.

You%26#39;ll see quite a lot of different plazas, gas stations and restaurants along this whole stretch of the Rte 1 area.

all the way up past Bertucci%26#39;s where the turn off is for Peabody%26#39;s Centennial Drive, which is right off of Rte 128 you%26#39;ll see the exit pretty quick as you%26#39;re heading for this area so watch for it.

May be you should do a mapquest and have it right with you to judge the turns, it%26#39;s the only thing I think you%26#39;d have to do for this Hotel where you%26#39;re not familiar with the area. Other than that you%26#39;re going to be JUST fine here and once you get a feel for where it is and how you got there etc...you%26#39;ll be fine!

It sounds as if you%26#39;re planning this visit at a pretty good time too after the mad rush for the Salem Haunted Happenings Festivities up there, which is a GOOD thing-because you just missed thousands of people in your travels! You%26#39;ll be able to hopefully relax and may be see the interesting sights in a

    quieter atmosphere?

If you do get up to Salem on your weekend visit? There%26#39;s a lot of really nice restaurants up there too. Try to remember these names, Finz Seafood Restaurant at Pickering Wharf, it%26#39;s wonderful! Then The Lyceum which was unbelievable and I heard a good review on Rockafella%26#39;s in Salem again this weekend, which is one that I%26#39;m going to try one of these days.

You can get to Boston from Peabody very easy. The earlier the better on weekends, that%26#39;s the key, especially if it%26#39;s a beautiful sunny day on that Rte 1., so the earlier the better. As you get near the Square One Mall you%26#39;ll see even more cars, but it moves you%26#39;ll be fine. In fact when I drive down to Boston I have to go this way myself. I go to Rte 1 then either I head to Revere for the Ted Williams Tunnel to get right in to Boston via the Airport Rd. or a lot of times I go right over the Tobin Bridge. Either way it%26#39;s $3 now at the toll going in to Boston.

    Back to the Peabody Marriott!

    Dltreks,

Here I am telling you about the tie ups in this area and to YOU it%26#39;ll be NOTHING coming from New York%26#39;s crazy traffic patterns!!!

You%26#39;ll be JUST fine at this Marriott! It%26#39;ll be no bother for you staying here.

Have a great time on your trip to Boston!

Hi And Thanks soo much!!! You were right, I giggled as you were talking about traffic. Getting OFF Long Island is often an exercise in futility. Timing IS everything!! Thanks for all the tips. We will be arriving in Boston probably around 2:30pm on a Friday. We have all day Sat, and Sun. Hopefully traffic is quiet!! Thanks again!!

    Hi -

Don%26#39;t forget to shop at the Saucony Factory Outlet store - it%26#39;s right across the street from the hotel at Saucony%26#39;s company headquarters.

Peabody is fine for a day in Boston and a day in Salem. It%26#39;s very easy to get to either by car in 20-30 minutes.

    Have fun!

Thanks everyone. We are staying in peabody. It is final. Thanks for the tip on the Saucony store. We do actually run, and I wear Saucony. Looking forward to our GetAway in Boston.

Saucony was acquired by another company. The brand name will continue to be sold. The factory outlet and corporate headquarters are being relocated from Peabody, MA to the site of the new owner in Lexington, MA sometime after the beginning of 2006.

  • USA Tour will start in Boston (Lone Traveller)

    Hi all,

I鈥檓 20 Years old and live in Yorkshire England. I am currently in the process of

Planning a coast to coast USA Trip. My journey will last from April 29th to

May 20th and will take me from London to Boston then to New York,

Washington D.C., Orlando, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles,

San Francisco, Seattle back to London. Various nights in each place.

I have got a 21-day Greyhound coach Pass; ive heard this might not be

the best option but for me its the cheapest. Just after some advice if anyone

has done anything similar or even a long haul coach trip in America. Any

safety tips? and am I wise in doing this. Even though 80% is booked still

    can%26#39;t help feel nervous!

P.s. I have hotels booked in every city. so just have to get there on time!

    Thank you.

USA Tour will start in Boston (Lone Traveller)

    Hi lukey01,

What a trip that will be for you! I just wish you were traveling with some one else, that%26#39;s the only thing about it that makes me a little leary lukey01! It%26#39;s just that the world we live in now is WAY too creepy, you know what I mean? Don%26#39;t get too friendly and too talkative with strangers and if they are way too friendly? Get up and move away from them and sit near the bus driver! If the bus driver is way too weird? Get up and move away from him/her to the middle of the bus and talk on your cell phone a LOT!

Make sure you program in the State Police #%26#39;s for every single State you%26#39;re going to be in! Go online right this minute and get that information before you leave. This is one time when you need to make sure you have your cell phone with you at all times! Do you hear me! I%26#39;m not kidding you either. This world and our society we live in now is WAY too weird! Do NOT trust any one on this trip you%26#39;re taking.

I have two friends that did this exact trip by bus back when we were all in our 20%26#39;s and they had the best time of their lives. It was a little different world back then though. They came home with stories that we heard in to the night for days! It%26#39;ll certainly be a trip that you%26#39;ll never ever forget, that%26#39;s for sure. One thing with my friends though? To this day? They won%26#39;t get on a bus, they absolutely refuse! The only reason they won%26#39;t travel by bus any more is because back in the 70%26#39;s the buses weren%26#39;t as comfortable as they are now, at least now you can recline the seats and you have a little leg room in some of them, more than others!

Enjoy your trip and have a great time! Take a lot of pictures and remember, I%26#39;m serious when I say these things you know about using your cell phone a LOT! I might sound like a nut to you, I%26#39;m NOT I%26#39;m an AUNT with nieces and nephews your age! One thing you have to have is street smarts if you%26#39;re going to take a trip like this around the USA, especially in this day and age! You know I even think you should probably pack a can of mace and have it handy at all times! Look for it and pack one and make sure you can get it in a second! I%26#39;m serious and be careful when you fall asleep on those buses, make sure you know where your backpack is all the time! You should probably just pack very light so you won%26#39;t have to worry about a lot of things in case you have to rush away from any thing OR any one!

These are some important things you need to consider if you%26#39;re going to travel this way across the USA. Check back here before you go from time to time may be you%26#39;ll see more safety tips here to think about!

Enjoy yourself just the same, you%26#39;re certainly going to be in some fantatic States! It%26#39;ll be a trip that you%26#39;ll never ever forget!

Make sure you let us know how your adventurous trip was when you get back!

    NOMO01

USA Tour will start in Boston (Lone Traveller)

I%26#39;ve done several long-haul bus (and train and road) trips... most when I was alone and in my 20s. I always had a ball! I never had any of the problems that keep people from taking buses, though sometimes the neighborhoods where the bus terminals are located can get a little dodgy in some cities. Be prepared to take an occasional taxi... some of your destinations are sprawling cities where terminals might not be close to your hotel, and public transportation may be less efficient than you might be used to. If you tell your Greyhound driver where you%26#39;re staying, they%26#39;ll sometimes make a ';courtesy'; stop to drop you closer to your hotel than the terminal is. I think it%26#39;s ';against the rules';, but drivers have saved me HOURS of unnecessary transit times by dropping me off at unauthorized stops on the route. It%26#39;s worth at least asking the driver if the terminal is within walking distance of your hotel as you approach your destination.

ATM machines are EVERYWHERE, so you won%26#39;t have to carry much cash. In the larger cities, even cabs take debit or credit cards.

I do agree that a cell phone is a ';must have';. If you don%26#39;t have one, you can get a ';pay as you go'; phone quite cheap at many convenience, drug or grocery stores. Personally, I might put ';911'; on speed-dial, but the idea of pre-programming the phone number of every state%26#39;s police department made me chuckle... and carrying mace without a permit is illegal in many places. That was about the worst suggestion I%26#39;ve ever seen in this forum!

As it gets closer to your trip, keep posting questions!

    Hi Lukey01 again,

    Go to this site...

    homesecuritystore.com/pepper_spray_mace.html

It IS a good idea to have mace/pepper spray

for this adventure you%26#39;re undertaking AND

this is NOT the worst suggestion on this site. End of discussion.

Not only is Mace illegal or requires a permit in many jurisdictions, it is banned from airports and most public/government buildings. (As it is in your own country) You%26#39;ve got plenty of time to check out the legal and practical implications before your trip.

This website is extremely good to read before you go, it%26#39;s good to know and read about the statistics of crime that%26#39;s going on across the country and also why you need to be aware no matter who doesn%26#39;t agree with this situation now in our society.

    http://mystunguns.com/peppersprays.html

What an exciting trip. I hope you enjoy it! I%26#39;d suggest getting a good map of each city you will be visiting, and put in some planning time so you know what you want to see, and what areas you want to avoid (i.e. bad neighborhoods).

In many states you do need a permit to carry mace. Personal decision. For safety I like a portable marine horn - earsplitting sound that will chase off most of the baddies. Most muggers are lazy and opportunistic. In other words, they don%26#39;t want to have to work too hard for a chance at your money and/or person - so stay alert and aware! (I%26#39;m also a mom and an auntie with kids your age).

You should definitely know how to get a hold of the authorities in whatever area you are traveling. 911 works almost everywhere, but still has not come to some small, rural areas. I think you can dial *SP for the State Police in many areas - any know if this system works?

Good point made about the location of bus terminals, especially in larger cities. Boston may be the exception here. South Station is well lit and well set up, very convenient downtown location.

    Travel safely!

    Veteran's Day Closings

I was just wondering if anything aside from banks and federal buildings will be closed for Veteran%26#39;s Day. Are all the historic sites still open? I know there%26#39;s a parade on Friday but not sure if anything else will be impacted. Also, are retail stores open on Sunday%26#39;s? Trying to plan what we%26#39;ll do when.

    Veteran's Day Closings

Taletimes, that is a great question! I had just assumed that everything would be open this weekend.

What parade on Friday? Should we steer clear of Boston and visit an outside attraction?

We are visiting for the first time and will be squeezing in a lot of activity in 3 days.

We have thought of the museum and the Sam Adams Brewery Tour. I am just finishing up the rest of our plans.

    Veteran's Day Closings

I cannot 100% confirm open/close for a particular attraction you are interested in for Veteran%26#39;s Day, but I would bet that most everything IS open. Veteran%26#39;s Day is pretty much a white collar and federal employee holiday. All stores will be open on Veteran%26#39;s Day, and all stores are open on Sundays.

FYI: a quick check of the JFK library website shows they are open daily, except Thanksgiving/XMAS/New Year%26#39;s.

Museum of Science is open daily, except for Thanksgiving/XMAS.

Museum of Fine Arts is open daily, except Thanksgiving/XMAS/New Year%26#39;s/Patriots Day (3rd Mon. of April)/July 4th

Thanksgiving and XMAS are pretty much the only days that retail stores close. This is typical of most attractions around Boston, as well, with minor exceptions. The big summer holidays and the minor holidays in winter/fall are pretty much business as usual.

    Thanks for your reponse, Powie.

Cat50....I believe there%26#39;s a Veteran%26#39;s Day Parade on Friday. I don%26#39;t remember what streets are affected but the event site for Boston should tell us that. As long as you%26#39;re walking, it shouldn%26#39;t be a problem. Enjoy your trip. I used to visit Boston quite a bit but haven%26#39;t been there in about ten years. Looking forward to it. You%26#39;ll love this city. It%26#39;s a great place.

Thanks Powie for all the info! We are doing some of the museums too.

And Taletimes, yes, we are walking so the parade won%26#39;t affect us. 10 years is a long time. Wonder if things will seem changed to you? Have a great time and it looks like the weather is going to be kind too!

    Wedding Reception Location Question

Anyone been to or have any information on events at the Roof Top Ballroom at the Omni Parker House Hotel for a wedding reception?

    Wedding Reception Location Question

I attended a Christmas party there a couple of years ago. The set up was quite lovely and the food was pretty good. You certainly can%26#39;t go wrong with the view! If I recall, the decor felt slightly Louis the something - pale walls and gold filigree around the windows which are floor to ceiling.

    Ornate but tasteful.

It would be worth a call to the events coordinator to see what the schedule is for booking and what%26#39;s available depending on when the wedding is to be. Many reception sites book out 13 months in advance; this may not apply with the Parker House but it would be worth asking.

    Wedding Reception Location Question

    HIWALSH,

About 8 years ago I helped cater an American Express Christmas party at the Roof Top Ballroom. The view was certainly beautiful from this room, there%26#39;s no question about that. The Staff in their kitchen without a doubt know exactly what they%26#39;re doing when serving a large function all the different courses. The food without a doubt was delicious, I know this because we tried it!

The Head Chef at the time that was employed there (may be he%26#39;s not there now!)unfortunately was a complete and total NUT in the kitchen. The reason why I know this is because the guests out on the floor attending this affair kept asking all the caterers if they were all right!

For one thing, he was gay and had a very high pitched annoying, terribly loud voice. That%26#39;s not the issue or the point at all here. The problem was, he had an extremely high pitched loud, boisterous, ignorant and absolutely rude way about handling all the events that were run there.

We were all even warned about him before we worked there that night and when these people warned you about some thing or some one it was never that often and they weren%26#39;t kidding with this guy! In all my years on this earth and in all the Hotels in Boston that I worked in with that catering service. I never in my life saw anything like it.

    I have family members that work in the Parker House that knew of him and warned me about it! Whether he%26#39;s there now or not, since they renovated the Hotel may be they ';renovated their Staff as well!';

I have no idea, but please be leary of anything like that going on. It isn%26#39;t very healthy, professional or very nice for the guests to witness things like that at all, especially dishing out the money you have to for these type of affairs. It was uncalled for and extremely uncomfortable and unprofessional for the guests at this particular affair to hear and see this. It wasn%26#39;t a very joyous holiday season for them that year, they kept saying to us because of him!

If you get the chance? Go to this site, it%26#39;s on the 36th floor at 100 Federal St., right in the Financial District. They have Private Events such as weddings and it%26#39;s absolutely beautiful, you%26#39;ll be surprised when you see it. I attended a function here before and couldn%26#39;t believe the food and the room it was held in. It was without a doubt, incredibly elegant and the food was exquisite. Go to

    www.bostoncollegeclub.com

Call Dawn Bacchiochi at 617 951-0975 and ask her about the ';waiting list'; to join the club so you can have a function here. It%26#39;s a 3 to 6 month waiting list from what I understand and if you go online to this site you can see this stunning ';room with a view'; it%26#39;s held in.

Also check the site www.mybostonwedding.com for different ideas!

    Good luck!

I went to a wedding reception there about 12 years ago. It was very elgant and a wonderful time was had by all. The views of the city at night were great. I don%26#39;t recall anyone having complaints about caterers, cooks or anything else.

For purposes of comparison, try The State Room (formerly the Bay Tower Room) on top of 60 State Street.

    Refer to:

    www.stateroom.com/pages/wedding%20package.pdf

    Requires Acrobat reader

I hope whomever is the company in charge of the State Room is better than when it was the Bay Tower Room. I coordinated a Christmas party there a number of years ago and was sadly disappointed. And I don%26#39;t think that had a lot to do with our budget. The waitstaff was lackluster and the food mediocre. The Parker House was much better. Just my opinion.. your mileage may vary.

The State Room has new ownership and management. They manage functions at Ballroom Veronique,(a Tudor castle ballroom), Club Longwood at Longwood, the Boston University Club and the State Room. I do not represent their interests. Here is a lisitng of their current clients:

    Hi Edgers,

I had dinner one night at the Bay Tower Room right when they were about to change hands and from what I%26#39;m hearing you%26#39;re right because it%26#39;s MUCH MUCH better than it was before with these group of people revamping it all up!

  • Hampton Inns

Has anyone had experiences with Hampton Inns? did you like the hotel? Was it any better that Courtyard or Holiday Inn?

Planning a road trip and looking at options.

    Appreciate your help!

    Hampton Inns

Most Hampton Inns are good places to stay, especially if they were built specifically as Hampton Inns. My mom stayed at the Hampton Inn in Woburn (north of Boston) and didn%26#39;t care much for the hotel. I believe it was a Comfort Inn and the Woburn Inn before that. She said that the walls were very thin and that she could could hear the traffic from the highway and also the person next door. On the other hand, there is a Hampton Inn in York, where my family lives, that I have heard many positive things about and think that any Hampton Inn that was built as a Hampton Inn would be a good choice.

Holiday Inns can really be a mixed bag. I think that a Holiday Inn Express would be a better choice than a regular Holiday Inn, as they have a free continental breakfast with delicious cinnamon rolls each morning. There is a Holiday Inn Express in Braintree that we have stayed at and would highly recommend it to others. I have never stayed at a Courtyard by Marriott, so I can%26#39;t comment on that kind of hotel.

    Hampton Inns

For a recent positive review, (Nov 2nd), on the Courtyard by Mariott hotel in the hotel review section of Trip Advisor, use this link:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60745-r2287…

We dont stay at 2 star hotels anymore

With the deals at upscale hotels like Omni Hotels you get much better value and service for your money. Life is too short to stay in a hotel that has cheap furniture, low end linens that are so thin you can see through them.

Check out Omni Hotels and Fairmont Hotels they are the best value without paying as much as a FourSeasons.

These hotels like Hamptons and Courtyards are popping up everywhere as they are just cookie cutter hotels going up with francise money for the chain as the reward to the company.

Most of the courtyards are converted Holiday Inns that become popular just because they Have the marriott name on the building.

Enjoy your stay and treat yourself better

    Your deserve it!

A second positive review (NOv 4th) of the Courtyard at Mariott Hotel can be found at:

Hampton Inns are always clean, and comfortable. When traveling we look to stay at the Hampton Inns first. I have stayed in them all over from Texas to Vermont. They are owned by Hilton, and are always a safe bet for a nice room with a free breakfast, internet connection and most have pools. They also have excellent staff training for customer service and it shows. I can%26#39;t remember a time when I ran into an inatentive staff memeber. Cleanliness is the most important factor for me, and I%26#39;ve never been disapointed.

    Help in finding the airport?

    Hi,

I could use some advice on flying out of the Manchester airport for Christmas. I live in Boston, but the deals are so much better if I don%26#39;t fly out of Logan. It seems like MHT is easier to get to than the Providence airport, but I am not sure how to go about this - hopefully by train? I am a poor student so a cab is out... :)

    Help in finding the airport?

    You%26#39;re in luck Amyk80,

Call this bus line for a schedule, make sure you hook up with them early enough to catch your flight out of Manchester...

    Vermont Transit Lines @ 800 552-8737

They go right to Manchester Airport so you won%26#39;t have to worry about a taxi or how to get there. They leave out of Boston too! Go to this site, to check out the schedule and fares....

    http://www.vermonttransit.com/fares.html

Good luck, enjoy your flight home and YES flying out of Manchester beats Logan any day, any time you can get a flight there, you go for it!

    Help in finding the airport?

    Amyk80,

The Vermont Transit Bus Line is right at South Station! Here%26#39;s their direct # 617 526-1800....

and it definitely goes right to Manchester Airport from Boston...

You can take a bus to either airport from Downtown Boston

or it might be cheaper to fly from Logan avoiding the bus fees.

Did you try Jet Blue first

If you are flying to destinations be sure to check the air line web sites.

    theme parks?

is there any theme parks within the Boston area for us thrill seakers?

    theme parks?

None in greater Boston. All are most likely closed by now.

Canobie Lake Park over the border in Salem, NH, is the closest. A smaller theme park, but with some decent thrill rides. About 35 minutes north of Boston up Rt. 93 to exit 2.

Six Flags New England is the big theme park in the region. Less than 2 hours west of Boston on the Mass. Pike to Rt. 91 in Springfield. Six Flags is in neighboring Agawam.

    theme parks?

    Replys are correct

No theme parks around Boston all are over a hour or two away.

If you are looking for theme parks go to Orlando not New England.

    Boston is all about History,Sports,Museums,Boating,Shopping,etc

    Good Luck on the rides

We will be in Boston the first week of December.....Are there any tours, etc. then. It looks like everything closes at the end of october.

    boston tours

    Hi KMA,

It looks as if you%26#39;re out of luck with the majority of these tours because they%26#39;re seasonal and ended this past weekend unfortunately. May be rent a car and explore that way? Hopefully you have a good week for it though, you might not like driving in the snow coming here from Baton Rouge!

It%26#39;s the beginning of the Holiday season; you%26#39;re going to enjoy your stay in Boston, wait until you see all the lights every where, it%26#39;s such a pretty time of year to be here!

    Have fun!

    boston tours

Best thing to do is stay in downtown like the Parker House.

They are on the Freedom Trail,Irish Heritage Trail and Literary Trail

There are also packages available too like

Holiday shopping in Harvard Sq we recently noticed and they also have a chocolate tour each year which should be starting soon. We love the location and stay there as its a great value and very Boston Historic experience/

There is a tour of the North End shops and restaurants during the daytime about 10am or so. I%26#39;ll post when I find the specifics!

Thanks everyone for all and any advice. We will be staying at the Colonnade since my husband is there for a conference. I will be on my own most of the time. I know I want to do the freedom trail, if the weather cooperates.

Also check the website the The Wang Center and the Emerson Majestic Theatre. They will be getting their holiday themed shows in order that week. Perhaps you can take in a matinee. Tours and things tend to end when the warm weather does. You can still take a trolley tour as the vehicles have heat in them as far as I know.

You may want to check out these Christmas events:

December 鈥?Newberry Street Holiday Stroll (Dec. 1). Winterlights Festival (Dec. 4-5), a two-day event in the Prudential Center with carolers and bell ringers, entertainment, etc.

Details available at the Greater Boston Visitor%26#39;s Convention %26amp; Visitor%26#39;s Bureau. 1-888-SEE BOSTON; or www.bostonusa.com.

The trolley tours operate all year long

The duck tours stop but the trolley tours are longer and more in debth on the historic sites and wider area to be seen

    Good morning KMA,

Bus Tours have ended for the season unfortunately. You can still purchase a Go Boston Card though and tour around the City if that%26#39;s what you were referring to at the time?

    Check this site out...

    www.GoBostonCard.com

They%26#39;re having a Sale right now you can save 15% on 2, 3, 5 %26amp; 7 day cards for a limited time. The Sale ends Tuesday November 15th only on this particular site here mentioned! So check it out before you%26#39;re arrival!

It%26#39;s still pretty good to have one even though you don%26#39;t get bus tours out of the City with it! You get unlimited Boston Sightseeing including a 2 day trolley pass, Museum admissions, historic sites, you save up to 20% on shopping and 20% on dining.

It%26#39;s well worth it. You can either have it shipped to you now or you can pick it up in town at the redemption centers listed on their site.

Some of the attractions are seasonal but there%26#39;s still a lot to see and do and it%26#39;s well worth looking in to purchasing this card.

Good luck and have a great trip!

    Thanksgiving on a farm?

Does anyone know where a couple can go for a thanksgiving dinner on a farm or turkey farm in New England (we live in Boston)?

    Thanks

    Thanksgiving on a farm?

I don%26#39;t know of any farm (I think Green Ridge closed, but you could ';Google';)

You might want to try Old Sturbridge Village. I had a Thanksgiving dinner there years ago... though as I recall, we had it the day before or the day after because it was sold out well in advance.

    Thanksgiving on a farm?

    Good morning vankabanka,

I don%26#39;t know of any in MASS. In New Hampshire there%26#39;s the Christmas Farm Inn in the White Mountains.

In Maine I%26#39;ve been to the ';Clay Hill Farm'; for dinner in York and there%26#39;s one in Ogunquit. It%26#39;s incredible. It rests on 30 acrs of colorful gardens. It%26#39;s one of the most reliable and finest restaurants on the Seacoast. My whole family loves it there! It won the ';Derona award'; which is like winning an Oscar. May be you should see if you can get reservations there?

    www.clayhillfarm.com

I%26#39;ve been to The White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport for dinner before, that%26#39;s exquisite too! It%26#39;s an elegant 3 story Country Inn.

If you go to www.visitingnewengland.com it might help you to decide where you want to go for dinner.

In the White Mountains there%26#39;s the Christmas Farm Inn with Spa facilities.

Nestlenook Farm is another place that you could check out to see what they have for Thanksgiving.

Good luck and have a great Thanksgiving!

If you are considering a Thanksgiving getaway for a couple days or whatever, maybe Farm By The River in North Conway would be nice. Check out www.farmbytheriver.com. Oh, wait, they only appear to serve breakfast for their guests. No mention of lunch or dinner. Very nice looking place, though. I%26#39;ve taken my wife horseback riding there several times.

I just thought of another place that you should Google through to see if there%26#39;s farms for dinner---check out the state of Connecticut on this forum for ideas and suggestions....

There%26#39;s a TON of Inns and places down there for dinner...check this one out online...

    Hart%26#39;s Turkey Farm

    Route 3, Meredith, NH 03253

    (603) 279-6212

Hart%26#39;s Turkey Farm is an institution in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire... Located on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Hart%26#39;s Turkey Farm had an absolutely LOUSY breakfast buffet during biker week this past June. Plus, it%26#39;s not exactly a farm, but a touristy restaurant, with a stupid little gift shop that you have to walk thru to get to the back dining room.....

The Gibbet Hill Grill in Groton, MA is located in a restored barn on a working dairy farm. The restaurant is surrounded by hundreds of acres of conservation land. They offer Thanksgiving dinner. Check it out at:

    www.gibbethill.com/GHG/htm/thanksgiving.htm

Thanky you all for your wonderfull suggestions!

Jacob Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast in Seekonk, MA about an hour south from Boston has a Thanksgiving package that includes a Thanksgiving diner.

Check them out on TA they are one of the top 3 Bed and Breakfasts in Massachusetts I believe you can get to them from this page.

It is actually on a country Estate with upscale rooms that have Big Jacuzzi tubs, king beds and fireplaces they are geared more to a romantic getaway for couples you will not be roughing it but you will be in the country.

The bonus is they are right outside of Providence, RI so you can make a weekend out of it maybe do some Christmas Shopping

  • WEATHER in about 3 weeks???

Hi there! Anna from Long Island NY - Never been to Boston, and I am going 11/25-27. Just wondering if I should expect tons of snow during that time ???

    WEATHER in about 3 weeks???

    Hey Mizz,

Predicting the weather around here isn%26#39;t easy...I would say the chances of snow are slim, but you never know.

Two weeks back it was 45 or below all week. This week we%26#39;ve been in the 60%26#39;s.

Could be 60 and sunny, or 30 and snowing....Or, it could do both during your trip.

    Enjoy your stay either way!

    WEATHER in about 3 weeks???

Tons of snow would be highly unlikey, mayba a flurry atmost. Expect cool temps 40-50s, generally overcast. Bring the hat and gloves.

Oh, it%26#39;s snowed on Thanksgiving weekend before....in %26#39;89 we had 2 feet! (I remember because my brother had just got married.)

Expect it to be brisk and on sunny days very bright--but on gray days, darn right dank. We%26#39;re a coastal town....so we get the ocean dampness in the air. Cold to the bone.

Lived here all my life and only a couple of times there would be snow in Boston.

You will need a jacket as it will be anywhere from 30-50 degrees depending on the pattern.

November has been warm to date and thru this coming week 11/11 is going to be 50-60

You can still walk around BOston ok but its best to stay close to the historic sites like around Beacon Hill so you dont have to go far to see all the best of Boston

Try checking out the following hotels for great deals during that week

Omni Parker House Hotel (Best value) Best Location and invented Boston Creme Pie %26amp; PH Roll.

Holiday Inn Govt center (average H.I.)

Marriott Long Wharf (pricey)cookie cutter type marriott hotel

I remember that %26#39;89 storm. Had a newborn and it took 5 hours to drive from Leominster to the Cape.

    First time in Boston

Will be in Boston for first-time visit Thanksgiving weekend - to see Ansel Adams exhibit at Fine Arts Museum - what should be included on my ';must see'; list? Travelling with my 24 yr old son. Always interested in ';hidden gems'; ie, eateries, etc. Any info appreciated.

    First time in Boston

go to www.phantomgourmet.com for a wicked awesome restaurant guide and review. if you like to look at boston history, i recommend walking the freedom trail and checking out fanuel hall. the boston aquarium is a nice place to check out too.

    First time in Boston

The Freedom Trail is a must!

It will hit the highlights of historic Boston. It%26#39;s a great way to see the city on foot, and will lead you through some great areas. You can plan on lunch in the Quincy Market area as the Trail will take you to Faneuil Hall. Either meander through the food court in the Quincy Market Building. Or for a real experience visit either Durgin Park in the North Market Building - or the Union Oyster House also nearby.

Durgin Park is authentic New England food, try the Yankee Pot Roast, served at long tables with red checked cloths. It%26#39;s been in operation for over a century.

The Union Oyster House is the oldest restaurant in America. Lots of famous historical figures have eaten here. Good seafood, chowder, etc. It%26#39;s on an actual cobblestone street just around the corner from Quincy Market.

The Freedom Trail also will bring you into the North End to Paul Revere%26#39;s House and the Old North Church (one if by land, two if by sea...). The dining options in the North End are superb. Probably the best Italian food this side of the Atlantic. You can find loads of info on this site with specific suggestions. Definitely plan on going to Mike%26#39;s Pastry on Hanover Street for cofee and cannolli.

Other thoughts: A stroll through Boston Garden, and afternoon tea at the Ritz. Antique shops on Charles Street, exploring the streets and homes of Beacon Hill.

For shopping: Copley Place and the Shops at the Prudential Center. Both these impressive malls are connected by a glassed in elevated walkway.

Boston is small enough that you can easily get to any part of the city on foot, by MBTA, or cab. Have fun!

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was very nice too.

    First visit to Boston

Visiting Boston for the first time on 24/11/05, trying to work out the best area to stay in. The hotels I have looked at are Jurys, Wyndham, Harbour, Omni Parker and Nine Zero, but can%26#39;t work out which would be the nicest hotel, and which hotels are in the best position to see the sites.

    Fran

    First visit to Boston

    Hello Iangordon,

First it%26#39;s important that you know that out of the 5 Hotels you listed. Jury%26#39;s Hotel is in the Back Bay at 350 Stuart St. near Berkely St. it%26#39;s within walking distance to the Public Garden, Copley Place, The Pru Shops, Newbury St. and Boylston St. It%26#39;s a 4 Star Hotel.

The Boston Harbor Hotel is a 4 Star Hotel that%26#39;s within right on Boston Harbor and within walking distance to Quincy Market and the North End for dinner and Downtown Crossing.

The Wyndham Hotel in Boston is a 4 Star Hotel right at 89 Broad St., the quality and size of the rooms are nice. Location of this Hotel is very central. It%26#39;s in a 1928 renovated building in the Financial District within walking distance to the Quincy Market and Downtown Crossing. It%26#39;s nothing amazing to look at but a lot of people really like the location. It%26#39;s up to you!

A lot of people online here really like the Omni/Parker House, which was given 3 1/2 stars, it%26#39;s on Tremont St. in the historical section of downtown Boston, you can very easily walk down to the Quincy Market from here and the Theater District is within a few blocks, as well as Beacon Hill and the North End. It%26#39;s been recently renovated and it%26#39;s on the National Registar of Historical Places in Boston.

Nine Zero is a few doors up from the Omni/Parker House and it%26#39;s a lot newer, very modern and extremely hip these days to stay at. A lot of business people like it here due to it%26#39;s proximity to the Financial District as well as Spire Restaurant that%26#39;s located in this elaborate Hotel. This is a 4 Star Hotel as well. It%26#39;s very easy to walk from here to the Quincy Market, the North End for dinner or to stroll along Beacon Hill.

You%26#39;d have to decide which end of Boston you want to be in. Where do you think you%26#39;d really like to be? Either near the Quincy Market area and the North End/Beacon Hill OR do you want to be up by the Back Bay where Copley Place and Newbury St. is. Either way you can always check out the GO BOSTON cards www.gobostoncard.com and do a city tour on the beantown trolley, it would give you a good grasp of your surroundings by taking this tour as soon as you can!

Have fun and no matter where you stay? You%26#39;re going to have a wonderful time visiting Boston! You%26#39;re going to be very busy, there%26#39;s a lot to see and do here!

    First visit to Boston

You know something iangordon? I think if I had these choices? I%26#39;d stay at either the Boston Harbor Hotel OR Jury%26#39;s to tell you the truth! There, now you have it narrowed down even more! Take your pick from these stunning hotels!!!

In addition to the previously mentioned excellent choices, for purposes of comparison and price, you should peruse these very recent reviews for the Fairmont Copley Plaza, The Four Seasons and The Boston Yacht Haven all upscale 4 or 5 star hotels.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60745-r2287…

    tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60745-r2287…

    tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60745-r2287…

One last comment. The Yacht Haven is a unique, beautiful and relatively new hotel. It is relatively near the Quincy Market Faneuil Hall area. However, it will be in late November when you arrive and you will be adjacent to the harbor. The climate will be cold and damp but tolerable to us natives.

What to do with 3 Days in Bostan

    Anyone any ideas?

What to do with 3 Days in Bostan

    Good morning Sarah21,

So you have 3 days in Boston and you%26#39;re trying to figure out what to see and do while you%26#39;re here? If we had an idea of exactly when you%26#39;re going to be visiting it%26#39;ll help us with the iteniary, then we can give you some different ideas. Post it here as soon as you can and keep checking back from time to time and we%26#39;ll try to add various ideas.

For starters, if you go to www.explorenewengland.com and click on events for Massachusetts it%26#39;ll list upcoming events in the Greater Boston area as well as throughout the state. Each of the New England states are here as well for you to check out. This website is really pretty good, it%26#39;s affiliated with the Boston Globe newspaper in Boston. For instance right now through December 31st is the famous Ansel Adams photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts. When I went to Yosemite in California a few years ago I saw quite a lot of his photographs. They%26#39;re absolutely incredible. I ended up buying several packages of note cards and prints, they%26#39;re pretty amazing black and white shots. So one ';must do'; Sarah21 is the visit to the Museum of Fine Arts while you%26#39;re in Boston.

You could rent a car for a day and explore the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. Get mapquest out and look for Rye, Newcastle and Portsmouth NH. then head in to Maine and you could go to the Maine Outlet Shops in Kittery to shop? Leave there and go up the coast to York, Kennebunkport and check out Wells along Rte 1.

You have all kinds of options weather permitting! You could head down to Newport, RI and see the spectacular mansions. Starting November 12th for the start of the upcoming Christmas Season there%26#39;s something pretty interesting happening there, check this site out....

    http://www.newportmansions.org/

Enjoy your visit to Boston and New England!

What to do with 3 Days in Bostan

Well, there are a lot of things you can do, depending on the time of year. If you%26#39;re new to Boston the best thing to do first would be to take an tour of some kind just to get to know the layout of the city in a general way. I like Beantown Trolley tours or Boston Duck Tours--though those will stop running soon if they haven%26#39;t already.

The Boston Aquarium is great if you have kids. And the Museum of Science has an amazing Star Wars exhibit right now. I think that%26#39;s great for kids and adults if you%26#39;re a fan. I love the museums in Boston. Try the MFA for starters (museum of fine arts) and then maybe try the isabella stewart garder museum.

I also like walking down Newbury Street: Great high-end road with tons of shopping, it%26#39;s also centrally located so it%26#39;s easy to get to the Prudential Center and all the various areas of Boston.

There is also a value card called the Go Boston Card which is popular, saves money on things in Boston. I think you can see all the historical sights on the Freedom Trail. A good deal since you%26#39;re staying three days and might want to try a bit of everything.

In addition to the MFA, there%26#39;s also the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum -- the building itself is worth seeing. It%26#39;s free if your name happens to be Isabella!

Cheers for all the idea%26#39;s. Ill be in Bostan in Jan 06. Intend to do lots of shopping. Will be visiting New Hampshire before Boston City. Im staying at the Bostan sheraton, Is this hotel OK? Also can i expect very cold weather conditions? Thanks again.

    Hi Sarah21,

YES you can expect VERY cold weather when you arrive in January. Be prepared, dress warm and in layers!

You could download a free desktop weather alert for Boston a week or two before your trip? This way you can see then and there the weather conditions at your destination, it would come in handy and be so convenient. It%26#39;ll give you a little idea any way of what to expect with this type of info on storms brewing, rain or snow conditions, things like that. It also is good because you can set it up with either a 3 day or 10 day forecast which would be really good to know before your arrival. It%26#39;ll also give you traffic reports which would come in pretty handy, so you%26#39;d have an idea of what to expect any way. Go to www.weather.com and download it from there.

Where it%26#39;s available for free you might as well utilize it before your trip.

Especially where you%26#39;re traveling to such a large metropolitan City such as Boston, it would really help with your plans on what to pack and what to expect.

You should also check out www.massport.com and www.bostonusa.com for transportation, ideas on what to see and how to get to the different destinations around Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Your hotel%26#39;s front desk along with the Concierge service there will be really good in helping you with where you might like to go and how to get there!

You%26#39;re going to have a great time in Boston, enjoy yourself and if there are any other type of questions you have? Don%26#39;t hesitate to ask them, right here on this site!

  • Hotel query

    Hi all,

I am visiting Boston from Dec 2 to Dec 10. I have the Hyatt booked for the four nights 6th to 10th. However since I booked the Hyatt ,my girfriend and I have decided to get married in Boston. So as you can imagine we are looking for a pretty nice hotel for the first four nights of that part of our trip. So far I have looked at the Boston Harbour, Wyndham and a couple of more in the general area near Quincy Market, which is my girlfriends favourite part of Boston. Last year we stayed in the Langham which we both really really enjoyed and would in all honesty probably opt to go back to. My query really is does anyone really rate one of the top end hotels in that area about all the others, dont really have a limit on what we spend, well within reason I guess. So any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated in helping to really make the most of that week we spend there.

    Thanks

    Michael

    Good morning Blasketisland,

For that area of Boston and for this VERY special occasion you definitely

should be either at the Boston Harbor Hotel with a Harbor view room or the Langham Hotel as you realize from staying there is quite nice! Did you have dinner at Julien%26#39;s the last time you were at the Langham? It%26#39;s positively WONDERFUL.

Some people on this site prefer the Omni/Parker House for sentimental reasons and because of it%26#39;s proximity also because it%26#39;s a very historical landmark in Boston as well as being in such an ideal location.

The Hyatt in Boston is really in an up and coming area though as well and if you%26#39;re young you would definitely prefer this Hotel to get to all the hot spots.

Good luck in choosing your hotel! I%26#39;ll tell you with me? If I could stay at that Boston Harbor Hotel or the Langham tonight? I would in a heart beat! They%26#39;re both gorgeous hotels!

Best Wishes and Congratulations on your upcoming marriage plans! Good for you!

Have fun visiting Boston on your Honeymoon!

    Michael,

If you get the chance check out this Hotel on Tremont St., I had dinner at their Spire Restaurant and it was INCREDIBLE. The hotel got a 4 Diamond rating and it%26#39;s quite hip! Check it out to see if you and your fiancee would like to stay here, it%26#39;s within walking distance to the Quincy Market area and the North End for dinner as well as Beacon Hill and the #9 Park Restaurant is right around the corner up near the State House.

    Hi,

Once you get to that level of hotels, they are pretty much all going to be wonderful.

The hotels where the celebrities stay when in Boston are usually either the Four Seasons, or the Ritz-Carleton, Boston Common. Also, many of the very wealthy who want luxury and privacy, will stay at the XV Beacon boutique hotel, on Beacon St.

However, a harbor view suite at the Boston Harbor hotel would be wonderful as well. If you have stayed at the Langham and really enjoyed it, you probably would be safest going back there again.

As you can see, it%26#39;s really a tossup. The decision should be made on what rooms the hotel has available for you on your travel dates, and what other ammenities you want (views, small boutique hotel, or large grande-dame type).

One hotel that consistently has gotten raves both on this site and in the Boston Globe, but no one has mentioned yet, is the Boston Yacht Haven.

I%26#39;m not personally familiar with it... just passing on what Ive read.

    Hi Blasket Ireland

Just browsing the site as I go to Boston on 26th Nov and came across your posting. How lovely for you both.

Being Irish (like you!) and being a female I have a bit of an inquisitive streak in me (and I%26#39;m not old enough to have experienced all the valleys of peeping windows in dear old eire!!) but anyway I was looking on your previous postings - as I do when ones attract my attention.

I%26#39;m rambling now - but noticed your past post re arrangements for getting married in Boston and the reply from ???Vistor re the Unitarians. Don%26#39;t know if you have your arrangements made now (I imagine you have) - but if you were interested in that option - the Unitarians have a beautiful Church on St Stephens Green in Dublin who I am sure would put you in contact with colleagues in Boston. They have a beautiful, welcoming community and their cermonies are so personal and thought-provoking. I may be able to provide additional info if you so require - just let me know. It would be an option I certainly would consider if I wasn%26#39;t happly married myself - and I did it the good old Catholic way!!!

Sorry I can%26#39;t help re the Hotels - I have always stayed at the Sheraton - fine for standard trips - but in your case - take heed of the other replies.

Best of luck to you and your intended and I hope you have a fantastic day and future married life together - and if you are based down by the Blasket Islands - you are halfway there - such a beautiful part of our dear isle!!)

(Just let me know if I can help with the Unitarian thing)

    Hello again Blasketisland,

I was just online checking out different sites and came upon this interesting one.

    www.luxurylink.com

I flipped through and happen to see the Nine Zero Hotel on it with a 2 night package that looks extremely reasonable compared to calling the front desk and getting their high rates. Check it out if you get the chance. It%26#39;s a deal and a half actually. Another possibility? Especially where it%26#39;s such a special occasion and you want it to be memorable; where it%26#39;s going to be your honeymoon now too; would be this idea? You could do a ';surprise 2 night package'; to an Estate in Newport, RI. to see what I mean go to this site mentioned and it%26#39;ll show you photos. It%26#39;s stunning there. It would only be a little over an hour away from Boston. Just rent a car and take off. On this site www.luxurylink.com there%26#39;s an unbelievable package for 2 in a luxurious Manor or Estate called the Chanler at Cliff Walk for $824. You could even see about the Auction on it to get it for less, what do you have to lose! What a nice surprise that would be for the two of you!

    Something to think about!

    Hi again guys,

First off let me say to NoMo, Beantown and Js, thanks for taking the time to give your tips and advice. Its great to get perspective from those in the know, as it were on how to really enjoy the best of Boston and live it up for a few days.

I was really, or am, undecided between the Harbour Hotel and the Langham. The main thing swaying it towards the Harbour would be that its a different place to try out, and that it seems to have some wonderful spa facilites there. I had looked at the Ritz-Carlton and The Four Seasons but I really just love the whole vibe around the Quincy and Faneuil area. I always love trying out new restaurants and food types and my word Quincy and the Harbour area has that going on.

I agree with you NoMo on the Langham, its one amazing hotel. My girlfriend thought she was in heaven when on the first night a maid come in and offered to turn down the bed clothing. What a gorgeous touch by them.

So right now, I am going to go back through them all and see how they weigh them up again. Will start with the Boston Yacht now take it from there.

Really appreciate all the help guys

    Blasketisland and Little Pumpkin!

I was just checking out to see where the Blasket Islands were and they%26#39;re right above the map where my grandmother lived in Ireland! She was from Bere Island, her name was Mary Moriarty! Does that ring a bell to either of you? I was there in the 80%26#39;s and then in 91 and in 01. We%26#39;re going back at the end of June for 3 weeks in %26#39;06. This time though we want to see Donegal and go down the west coast through Dingle Bay; then further down to Bere Island again.

I have cousins all over the place to see!

Enjoy your upcoming holiday in Boston to all of you in EIRE and your wonderful plans Blasketisland with your upcoming marriage and wedding!

    NoMo01

You are such a joy with your help and assistance to all!!

Hope you are looking forward to your trip in 06. Lucky you to have ancestory on Bere Island - It%26#39;s magic

Would imagine that you will fly into Shannon if you plan on visiting Cork/Kerry. Can I suggest that you plan to spend some time around Galway/Mayo (Mayo in particular) on your way to Donegal. In my opinion Mayo is the most beautiful county in Ireland, totally under-rated and less of the Oirish/touristy vibe going on. I lived there for 3 years and plan to return eventually to retire and ditch the rat race of the east coast.

Let me know if I can be of any help with your itinerary. Would have good knowledge of the West (Galway/Mayo in particular) and also the rat-race that is the East Coast (Dublin, Meath, Louth)

Blasket Island - my reply to your posting obviously didn%26#39;t warrant a reply!! Hope I didn%26#39;t offend...

    Hi all ,

Sorry for not getting back earlier, things got a bit hectic on me yesterday. I had kind of looked at the Unitarian Church idea Pumpking but didnt get too far on it. Not sure why as I dont know enough about it to knock it on the head. As it stands we are inclined towards a small service, well there will just be the two of us anway, on Boston Common probably in the evening time. We are in the process of trying to get that organised at the moment. So Pumpkin I am not as organised as you thought or I should be!!!!

NoMo, Pumpkin is right about you trying to spend some more time around Galway and Mayo, they are beautiful though I guess some times that is weather dependent. Like Pumpkin said, its way more of the real Ireland than the east coast around Dublin. While its easy to understand why tourists always hit the Dublin area while visiting here, I think the west coast and Mayo esp are much better to visit.

Spent some time looking at luxurylink.com too, Nomo, wow some amazing places on there. Truly wonderful locations to stay at.

Am thinking of the Boston Harbour now as the more likely place to stay, finances permitting :). It looks gorgeous and ideal for the stay.

Will have another look at the Unitarian Pumpkin and see what the story is. Thanks for the heads up all

Floridians going to Boston for 3 days...how's the weather...

My girlfriend and I are visiting Boston for 3 days and would like to know coming from Florida how the weather would be like? We floridians gets cold when it gets below 70 degrees. Are we going to be able to take part on any of the tours that are still available, like the duck tours and trolley tours? Any suggestions will help. We are on our mid 20%26#39;s.

    Thanking you in advance.

Floridians going to Boston for 3 days...how's the weather...

Today%26#39;s high temp is around 60. I would expect it to be cooler when you come (50%26#39;s). Check Boston.com and click on weather for an extended forecast. Duck Tours Run through Nov. 27--check Bostonducktours.com -- for further information. They are heated. Old Town Trolley tours are running, not sure of other companies. Have a great time.

Floridians going to Boston for 3 days...how's the weather...

It has been a great November so far.

But it could get colder anytime

50-60 more than likely/ You can take the Trolley tours all year round and they are heated.

Check out the North End for Italian food and Quincy Marketplace has lots of shops, food, bars etc

You can also take a tour of Fenway Park if you are interested in the Red Sox etc etc

I%26#39;m also from Florida originally. The weather varies. This week it%26#39;s been cold by Florida Standards but for Boston it%26#39;s going pretty good. I would recommend that you bring a thick coat and some clothes to layer. At night it%26#39;s quite chilly. Anyway, since you%26#39;re a Floridian definately bring your coate, but for the most part it%26#39;s been pretty nice here.

I also would tell you to get a Go Boston Card or a Historic Boston Explorer Pass. Duck Tours stop running in mid november I believe but certain Trolley tours run until the weather is bad. I believe the Beantown Trolley tour is still running.

Also, i%26#39;m also in my mid-twenties so if you need any suggestions on where to go/do etc. reply back i will be happy to help you :D

SHAXXON-can you please help us to decide where to eat-and go out?

    any suggestions?

Not too crazy about the French cuisine-can do American or Italian.

    Thanks!!!

    Heard Scolleys was good..........hmmmmmm

    thanks

    Dinner-need ambiance-fun-and a little bit of romance

YES! That Scollay Square Restaurant is GREAT, I was there a few weeks ago! It%26#39;s at 21 Beacon St., not too far from the Omni/Parker House! Check it out online, wait till you see the menu, I%26#39;d go back there in a heartbeat, it was terrific, a really fun place to go for dinner or lunch some day when you%26#39;re in town!

Any place you go in the North End would be really good! Lucca%26#39;s on Hanover St., the Daily Catch is near there, Limoncello%26#39;s on North Sq., and a few weeks ago I went to dinner at #5 North Sq., it was WONDERFUL! Tons and tons of nice restaurants up and down the streets of the North End to check out! I used to have a favorite one over there, but not any more. They%26#39;re all unbelievable in one way or another to me, either in their food or there ambiance.

If you go up by the Back Bay, Davio%26#39;s is unbelievable as well as Maggiano%26#39;s, so look for one of those in that area of town! If you want seafood then Legal%26#39;s Seafood at either Park Sq. right in Boston or Kendall Sq. in Cambridge are the two locations that I love as well as a lot of people that love these restaurants!

I%26#39;m finally checking out Rialto%26#39;s at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Sq., in a few weeks. It%26#39;s one place that%26#39;s getting a lot of great reviews and we%26#39;ve heard a LOT about it, so that should be fun!

Between Boston and Cambridge you%26#39;ll find quite a lot of unbelievable restaurants! Another one of our favorites is Le Groceria in Cambridge! It%26#39;s GREAT there! Some day check it out!!!

You%26#39;ll get some really good suggestons here, so keep checking back from time to time....

Good luck and have a wonderful time in Boston!

    Dinner-need ambiance-fun-and a little bit of romance

I really like La Summa on Fleet Street in the North End. Family owned--wonderful homemade sauce and pasta. We always make time for a meal there when we%26#39;re in town!

Check out Parkers Restaurant at the Omni Parker House Hotel.

Request the romantic table JFK proposed to Jackie at.

The menu is very wide scoping and that have a wonderful chateau brion for two/

What si the Nicest place to stay in Hyannis area

We are a family of five adults. We are staying 1 night. Thanksgiving. What do you think is the most luxurious place to stay. Also, the best resturant for Thanksgiving, New England style. We are coming from Mpls,MN.

What si the Nicest place to stay in Hyannis area

I would definitely recommend the Sea Coast Inn. I have heard a lot of positive comments about this place recently, especially regarding the owners, who are so polite and helpful. They surely know how to successfully run a hotel. They keep the place very clean and well kept. I think that you would definitely enjoy staying at the Sea Coast Inn. Enjoy your stay!

What si the Nicest place to stay in Hyannis area

Just watch out for the Swimmer.

can%26#39;t say i am an expert about lodgings in hyannis....but, the town of chatham has drawn us back 3 times in one year!! if u r planning one nite....stay at the chatham bars inn and dine there also....if that is booked try the captain%26#39;s house inn...both are luxurious to us...although one is a full scale hotel and the other a small upscale B%26amp;B.

If you don%26#39;t opt for Chatham Bars Inn then go a little west of Hyannis to Mashpee. Luxurious = New Seabury Resort.

We were in Hyannis last weekend for a getaway %26amp; stayed at the Anchor In %26amp; LOVED it. Absolutely cute, warm %26amp; cozy. Had a great view of the Harbor. Every room has it%26#39;s own balcony/patio. The feather down comforters were to die for. The rooms meticulously clean %26amp; very cute. I%26#39;d stay here again in a heartbeat. Also great free breakfast with muffins, bagels, etc.

    Cap Cod in a day?

My wife and I have some family business to attend to in Milton (we%26#39;re staying in Nantasket). We have a ';free day'; on Saturday 19 November and I was thinking about a quick drive to look around the cape. Thinking about, perhaps, maybe, making it all the way to Provincetown and back.

This may be daft. Which is why I%26#39;m askig. Do any more level heads have insight? Suggestions most welcome.

    Thanks.

    Cap Cod in a day?

It%26#39;s VERY do-able... I%26#39;ve done it MANY times from much further away. The traffic has subsided for the season, and you don%26#39;t have to worry about the everyday commuters, either, so you should be able to make a ';straight'; shot to P-Town in about an hour and a half if you go via Rte 6. After you cross the bridge, you could also opt for Rte 28 through Falmouth and the other ocean-side towns... Hyannis, Yarmouth, Chatham, etc. This will take a bit longer depending on what you may decide to stop and see. As an alternative, scenic drive back, I%26#39;d recommend Rte 6A through the small towns along the bay-side... a must-do for antique hounds, especially.

PS - The ';off-season'; is my absolute favorite time of year to visit P-Town!

    Cap Cod in a day?

Great suggestions from jsboston, I especially agree with a meander along 6A. The towns along the ';inside'; of the Cape are very beautiful, and less touristy than some of the Rte 28 spots.

Provincetown makes a great day trip, we%26#39;ve often done it from Scituate, MA, and had plenty of time for exploring. P-town is great off season. You can actually find a place to park in town, many shops are open, and there are great dining choices. Also, you should take the time to go out to the dunes, and Race Point. It%26#39;s breathtaking, really unique topography.

Plan on about 2 1/2 hours from Nantasket to Ptown. It%26#39;s about 100 miles, and you don%26#39;t have a high speed highway the whole way.

Gracias Beaucoup for your suggestions and insight. Never been to this part of Massachusetts before and am looking forward to a little meander. I know there are a thousand imponderables -- and I do tend to get side tracked -- but I%26#39;ll try 28 in and 6A out.

    Thanks again for the help.

  • Allston

Is Allston in northern or southern Boston? Same question with the BU campus?

    Allston

The best way I can explain this is that BU is west of downtown Boston. When you board a Green line trolley from downtown, you would head in the ';outbound'; direction. If you take the ';B'; train (Boston College-Commonwealth Ave.) it will leave you right at the sprawling campus. Allston is up the road (Comm. Ave.) heading west of BU.

    Allston

As a lifelong Bostonian, I must say this is the first time I%26#39;ve heard somebody reference northern Boston or southern Boston. HAHA!!

Allston/Brighton and BU are west of downtown Boston, and definitely require the T or a cab or a car ride. The B and C trains on the Green Line.

I guess I must have been a resident of midwestern Boston for all those years without knowing it! And before that, south-central Boston!

East Boston is north of the city. The North end is just south of the West End, and South Boston is to the east.

But Allston is definitely to the west.

Now that we%26#39;ve throughly turned you around, all subway trains heading to downtown are inbound, if you head away from downtown you are outbound. BU is definitely outbound, on Commonwealth Avenue (Comm Ave). The section of Boston known as Allston really begins just beyond the BU campus.

    10th Anniversary-need help! 2 days in Boston

Congratulations on your 10th year. You%26#39;ll love the Boston Park and Plaza Hotel and I believe you%26#39;ll have a wonderful time sightseeing. For those purposes you may want to pick up a Boston Explorer Pass or a Go Boston Card to make your trip more plesant. As for dinner on Saturday night if you want romance but so-so food try Top of the Hub. Another favorite of mine is Flemmings Steakhouse and The Capital Grille. I also really like the North End for amazing Italian Food. Try Mamma Maria, wonderful place and excellent food. As for going out--try Solas Upstairs at the Lenox, Phoneix Landing in Cambridge if you like 80%26#39;s music and slightly rowdy crowd. Also pick up Stuff @ Night, The Boston Phoneix or the Weekly Dig while in town. All free magazines and keep an updated club calendar for each week.

    Trip Report

I just wanted to thank everyone for your suggestions. They were very helpful. We just returned from a three night stay and I wanted to pass along some experiences to those who may be visiting for the first time. I used to be a frequent visitor here but hadn%26#39;t been back in over ten years. It won%26#39;t be that long until I return. I live in New Jersey and visit New York often, but for many reasons, Boston has always been my favorite city. I even love Fenway, even though I%26#39;m a Yankee fan. But then, how can any baseball fan not love Yankee Stadium, Fenway or Wrigley. But to the trip.......This is a great and easy walking city. Clean and safe, even at midnight. If you can, don%26#39;t bother with the tours, just get a good pair of walking shoes and get lost walking around. You won%26#39;t be disappointed.

We stayed at the Millenium which is across the street from Quincy Market and found it to be a terrific location. The market is steps away, the North End less than a five minute walk, downtown shopping a 10-15 minute walk and the theatre district 20-25 minutes. The T is a few minute walk and there is no shortage of good restaurants and bars within a ten minute walk in any direction. There is even a comedy club across the street at The Market. The hotel itself, considering the price, was good....not great. The selling point is location. We had a fireside room and it was typically big city small. Service was good and room was clean though the carpeting has seen better days.

As far as food...had a good lobster roll at Legal Seafood, and very good dinners at Limoncello%26#39;s and Rafia%26#39;s in the North End. Mike%26#39;s pastry shop is a must after dinner but be prepared to wait in line outside, even in mid-November the North End streets were jammed at night. A great atmosphere. One disappointment....I made reservations for 7:00 at Momma Maria by phone/voice mail on Thursday at around 1:30. Apparently no one was at the restaurant. The message said they would call back to confirm. They never did. I called back at 5:15 to check and was told they were sold out that night. I asked why no one ever called me back but he couldn%26#39;t give me an answer. If I never checked I would have shown up, told I had no reservation and been forced to wait somewhere. So as a word of caution, don%26#39;t trust their reservation system.

We also had pizza at Regina%26#39;s one afternoon, which was good, not great. Don%26#39;t understand the big fuss but I%26#39;m used to pretty good pizza so maybe that%26#39;s why. Still, it%26#39;s worth trying. Interesting place. But then, so is the whole North End. Bartley%26#39;s in Harvard Square is a unique experience. I read about it here and was a little skeptical. But the burgers are very good and greasy, the place cramped, noisy and old but it was a lot of fun. We waited outside for about 20 minutes where they pass out menu%26#39;s and take your order. You%26#39;re so tight inside it%26#39;s hard to not get friendly with the people around you. It%26#39;s a fun place and worth the visit.

We saw Blue Man Group and Shear Madness and both shows were really very good. If you%26#39;re used to New York theatre, this isn%26#39;t that. The theatre%26#39;s and staging are not the same but don%26#39;t be fooled, both shows were very entertaining, funny and well worth the money. Also, both shows were available at Bostix at half price but that might be a reflection of the time of year.

I know I%26#39;ve gone on too long but this was a fun trip. Never got to JFK or Fenway tour (construction) but it%26#39;s an excuse to go back, right? Thanks again for all your posts......they were very helpful. See you soon.

Glad to hear you had a great time. I always took good pizza for granted when I lived in Boston. However, since moving here, I really appreciate Regina%26#39;s. So I understand where you%26#39;re coming from on this. And yes, the road companies of Broadway shows aren%26#39;t as good as the real thing!

    Hi Taletimes,

Thank you for your great review of your visit to Boston. I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed it, it certainly sounds it to me! So glad you went to Limoncello%26#39;s, that ones a ';good one'; in that North End! Did you read the article from the newspaper about the owner as you walk in to the restaurant, by any chance? He worked in the North End in one of the restaurants for years and one day he played the lottery and didn%26#39;t he WIN it! That%26#39;s how he opened that restaurant you were in! I love the murals all around it, the whole ambiance of it is just so cool. He%26#39;s the nicest guy too when you talk to him! He brought us all over a glass of Limoncello liquor the last time we were all in there! Ever since then, I%26#39;ve been going to that North End Liquor Store across the street on the corner to get a bottle of it to bring home for guests, I love that liquor! That%26#39;s one of our favorite spots to hit over there. Although with us living here we try to go some where different every time we go to the North End; there%26#39;s just way too many now to call our favorite.

I%26#39;ve never been to Rafia%26#39;s or Momma Maria%26#39;s, heard about them though and all very good reviews! I saw Blue Man Group several times and wouldn%26#39;t hesitate to see it again, that%26#39;s always got something a little different in it every single time you see it! It%26#39;s an amazing fun show to see and never gets old or boring! I had to see Shear Madness several times too because my younger sister is a Hair Stylist and we got the biggest kick out of seeing it, it%26#39;s another one that changes a few scenes in it every time you go!

I%26#39;ve never been to Bartley%26#39;s, just heard alot of good things about it.

YES you%26#39;ll have to come back to check out the JFK Library and do that Fenway tour! The next time try to remember this Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in the Fenway, it%26#39;s wonderful! When I took classes at Emmanuel College, I used to love going to this Museum, it%26#39;s so amazing. What an extraordinary life this woman had. Remember to check it out the next time you%26#39;re in town!

I took my mother to the Regina%26#39;s Pizzeria a few years ago, we took the train down to North Station from Newburyport and just walked up to town and we went over to the North End for the Regina! From what I remember of it from growing up in the City and from getting it all the time when I worked in the Financial District? It used to be WAY BETTER years ago! I don%26#39;t know WHAT happened to it, this time around! The key to it always used to be there old fashioned ovens; that%26#39;s why they were always the best pizza around! I don%26#39;t know, this time around? We both thought it just wasn%26#39;t cooked enough or something underneath! Although the sauce and cheese was still incredible from the way it always used to be! Well, you know? We%26#39;ll JUST have to go back there and try it again; that%26#39;s ALL there is to it!

Glad you had a great time and give Boston another chance back to visit; because there%26#39;s still WAY more to discover! For events and attractions in Boston and the New England states, a really good site to check out is:

    www.explorenewengland.com

It%26#39;s updated with the different events and shows, restaurants and places to stay all around New England all the time and it%26#39;s extremely good because it%26#39;s affiliated with the Boston Globe, so it%26#39;s a really useful site to go to. I like it because they update it all the time with things going on around the City!
